Hi, i'm italian and i'm glad to become a member of this forum.
I just purchased an old Johnson outboard motor model J6BA.
The dealer told me it's a 6hp but in the logbook they wrote the maximum power at 4500 rpm is 5hp.
Who's right?
Is it a good engine?
1974 is the right year?
The registration number is B3249.
Thanks.
Regards.
Ale.

Re: Hi everybody from Italy...

A big welcome to Iboats Ale - from Canada. :)

We're missing the most important part of that model number - the part after the 'BA'. If it's from before 1980 it'll have it's year written after it, like J6BA74 for a 1974 engine. If it's got letters after that, then it was made after 1979. The code works like this:

1234567890
INTRODUCES

So J6BACS would be a 1980 engine, since C=8 and S=0.
It's definitely a 6hp engine, I don't know why they have it listed as a 5hp. Mabey they were thinking 5KW (actually 4.8KW). Or mabey they were thinking of the old 5hp engines which were similar to the 6hp.
Talking about how good a 30 year old engine is is pointless. If it's lasted 30 years it must be good, right? :D Seriously though, what really matters is the care it's gotten for those 30 years and what sort of condition it's in now. If you neglect the very best outboard for that time, it'll be bad.

Re: Hi everybody from Italy...

Thank you for reply.
I don't have the engine in my hands, it is still in the workshop and i'll keep it tomorrow, all the informations i gave were on the logbook...
I've got another couple of questions:
1)Is this engine able to recharge batterys (it has a plug on its right side)?
2)How much current flows from that plug?
3)Which kind of current is it?
4)Do i have to add some electrical component to charge my batterys?
Oooops, those are four questions!!!
Hoping not to annoy you...
Thanks a lot.
Ale.

Re: Hi everybody from Italy...

Wouldn't be much of a board without questions.

1) Mabey. It was optional. But the plug is a good sign.
2) Not much! I belive 5 amps (60W).
3) 12v DC
4) Depends on how much you end up drawing. It would be a good idea to remove the battery every now and then and put it on an automatic charger.

Hope this answers your questions!

'74 outboard specs. Helpfully in Italian. Hard to read though.
From the old OMC Site.
