Re: trailer safety chains

The one you posted doesn't look anywhere as heavy duty as the SS one I did, but two snap hooks rated at 1375 lbs. each is well within safety for my 16ft. Cobia in which trailer, boat and gear weigh in about 1600-1700lbs. I would trust them more than S-hooks for strenth and secure connections. Obviously, if your hauling a 30ft crusier, you have to take that into account.

right, I just looked for one that listed its breaking strength, couldn't really tell from the photos.

Still, it's not just holding or pulling a steady load - there could be a shock, if they go from no-load to full-load, at speed...I really don't know anything about metals, stress, breaking strength.

A runaway trailer is a frightening experience - like launching a missle - it's gone & all you can do is watch in horror, then change into clean underwear.

Re: trailer safety chains

I never gave safety chain methods and such a second thought... slapped them on and away I went. I only ever made sure to put my hooks in from bottom up to make it less likely to fall out. Very informative I must say... will check my length and make sure to cross them for now on.

With all this concern about safety chains, what about the brake actuation cable for the trailer brakes? (If your brakes even work?)
