being that you are in Canada, not much I say will be of help. However, def. look for a manufacturer or VIN. Based on what you did say of the condition though, maybe look for a new trailer for it?

What are you going to do with the boat? Leave it stored on the trailer and put it in every time you want to use it? Leave it in the water and haul it out for storage every winter?

It MIGHT be better to just buy the boat and either put a new trailer under it, or buy the boat and have it stored at a marina off trailer.

If you are putting it into brackish or salt water, consider this an opportunity to upgrade to a nice aluminum trailer that won't corrode as easily.

My suggestion, buy the boat, let them keep the trailer. If they don't want it, sell the trailer for scrap.

Exactly, that's what i'm saying, if the seller doesnt have the trailer registered in his name then i cannot buy it. But hes telling me that a can call it a homebuilt to get it registered and plated.
I don't care how good the deal appears to be, if the trailer is that easy to register, than the seller should register it before the deal is finalized. Then the trailer can easily be transferred. Do not believe a seller when they say it is easy but they are not willing to do it.

In case someone from Texas reads this thread the days of walking in and walking out with a homemade title is long gone. Now it is a complete PIA, even if home made you have to take photos and receipts, get inspected, get vin and then register. If you buy fabricated trailer without title/registration you get to do the same thing, and if VIN number is attached you get a bonded title. In the end no title/registration pay scrap for trailer or don't buy.
