Re: Trailer level question

Most weight distributing hitches won't make allow the surge brakes to function properly. That is why you bought that brand that you did.

Re: Trailer level question

It looks like I am gong to need Equal-i-zer Accessories and Parts - EQ95-01-5950. It says it will not interfere with the surge breaks. I am dying to get all of these goodies in to see how they make the truck handel. I was a bit concerned going from a 2013 Duramax to a 2001 Excursion. I hope this will make the truck handle good enough that I don't regret it.

First how much and how far is your towing going to be? Weight w/trailer 8,068 lbs (Boat Weight 6,480 lbs dry) Length overall 25'1"

10% of weight should be around 700lbs considering you will have items in the boat. I wouldn't use a step bumper for anything. I would put air bags on and be done with it. My tongue weight is 1200 lbs with air bags towing a 12750lb boat. True they don't shove weight back to the steer tires but i only move my boat 12 miles twice a year.Actually 10% on tandem and triple axles ia a little two much. recommend is 5-7%

Depends. Some times its 4-5 miles to the lake other times its 300 miles round trip to the coast and other times its 500 miles round trip up to the bay for a long weekend. Its not the lake trips I am worried about....

How does 10% of 8068 = 700?

Boat 6480
Fuel 420
Water 160
Gear 300(probably more than this)
Trailer 1600(estimate)

Total 8960

10% Tongue weight = 896

Re: Trailer level question

While you're at it look at the tires on the excursion...
Personally I would want load range E but you may be ok with D.
Get it weighed with the boat hooked up and make sure the axle weights don't exceed the combined weight ratings of the tires.

Re: Trailer level question

When I bought the truck it had bran new D range on them. I wanted E. I may swap them out sooner or later. I will see how it goes. The truck is not a daily drive, it just sits behind the house and gets driven on the weekend to home depot or when pulling the boat. Every other week or so I will drive it in to work. The tires should last a long long time on it. If they become a safty issue then I will swap them out for E

Re: Trailer level question

If you put low miles on your truck like I do with mine, you will be replacing your tires because of age and not tire wear.
