Thanks Dave. I had no idea about this rule and must have missed all that. I've linked to other sites many times in the past but I guess no longer...

Most folks would be amazed at the expense, people, and time involved in maintaining a web site, dealing with potential security issues, and monitoring the activities on the forums they provide. This is iBoats site, iBoats forum, and its operated under their rules. Imagine yourself as the owner of a Rapid Oil Change or a similar business and people constantly pulled up for an oil change and handed you a an oil filter and five quarts of oil they purchased on sale at WalMart and expected you to charge only for a small labor fee. Same principle applies here with posting links to other sites.

I can see all the arguments, but I have to side with iboats. <br /><br />1. It must cost a good amount of money and time to provide this resource.<br /><br />2. While I have seen them allow links to non competitors (vinyl providers for example), they have been consistant in not allowing direct links to competitors.<br /><br />3. They do allow you to talk about competitors and easily give enough information to find their website. They don't have to do that, but they do.<br /><br />4. I don't make iboats exclusive for my purchases, but I think it is just good form to give iboats the first crack and being my source and even preference when looking for supplies. What they give me by providing this forum has saved me a lot of effort and money. Loyalty gives companies incentive to treat us consumers right - quick service, fair return policies, expertise, good selection, and yes, this forum.<br /><br />They are a company, and they need to make money to survive. If more people rewarded extra services like this forum then companies would be more likely to provide them.<br /><br />These are my values, my thoughts.

I gave a link to Eagle Electronics to show someone a fishfinder that they might be interested in. It was a direct link and got changed to an "Indirect Link". They don't sell Fishfinders, so I was a bit confused by the responce. Also, I did check iboats for the fishfinder in question, but they were out of stock anyway. Was this wrong?? I realize that "Eagle" is a "Commercial" site, but they don't sell there product there that I know of....

Have any of you ever actually READ the agreements to things you click "OK" on (such as the user agreement you clicked on when you signed up for this site)? Heck, even at the bottom of this and every page, iboats says <br /><br />"iboats.com provides the message boards for the education and benefit of all boating enthusiasts."<br /><br />All I'm saying here is that iboats is not telling us the truth when they say that the board is for the benefit of all boating enthusiasts. It's very obvious that this board is here for THEIR benefit - to sell more product, and that is in direct contradiction to their "Disclaimer". Therefore, take all advice from this board with a grain of salt - your advise may have been edited because it referred to a non-iboats site. I'd rather frequent sites that have no agenda, such as www.**********.com, or www.**************.com, or www.******.com.<br /><br />Additionally, it doesn't cost that much to run the website. The initial investment for the software from infopop.com is a couple hundred dollars. Web space is cheap.

Jesus Christ Bob Get over it! You sound like a child!<br />If you don't like it here move on to other forums that allow direct linking to commercial sites ...<br />I think you will find that the rules are not that different on any forums even sites that sell nothing.<br />One little edit and now Iboats is lying to every body?? lol and attacking the credibility of all the great heap of information here??? WOW  <br />Regards Jon

Regardless of any "rules" or agreements, it's just common sense and decency not to post a link or suggest that someone patronize a competitor on a website sponsored by a business.

Unbelievable........... all that simply because the owner of this website did not appreciate a guest in his forum supporting a competitor product, sounds reasonable to me, but i do think the manners comment was a bit harsh JB.

Well, you wouldn't hang around the local McDonalds and suggest that customers go to Burger King instead would you? And how do you think the owner of the McDonalds would feel about it?

Sorry to veer the thread off topic - but this statement is not true..... while a personal web space is cheap (or often free) commercial space that suck up as much bandwidth as a site this huge can run in the thousands of dollars per month. A dedicated server can often require 4gig of ram of mroe to handle this many visitors, plus sotrage space and a good backbone... One of my servers costs me over $500 USD a month and it's not even CLOSE to the size of iboats. Another forum I admin at runs $1800 a month (for 2 servers) one for the SQL and one for the file system... again, this is for a considerably SMALL site....
