The GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) is normally indicated on a trailer title. However, if it is not, there are three components on a trailer that determine its load capacity. 1) tires. Look at the load capacity on the sidewall of the tire. If you have a single axle, multiply that number by 2. Tandem axle, multiply by 4 (the number of tires). 2) Axle capacity. Pull a wheel and hub and measure the spindle. if the spindle measures 1-1/16 just behind the threaded area, and the rear bearing area measures 1-3/8 inches you have a 3500# axle. If the spindle is straight and measures 1-1/16 at the inner and outer bearing areas you have a 2000# axle. 3) springs. Hard to tell. But if you have a 2000# axle the springs will likely be 2000# as well. Same for 3500# axles. So to figure the load capacity, it is the lesser of the spring, axle, and tire capacities. The weakest link determines the capacity.
