Trailer button question

Hello everyone new here and new with boats. I have a 1990 chaparral 1900 SL Sport with a 4.3 Mercruiser Alpha One serial number is 0c775932.

my question is the trim up switch doesnt work(works down). Ive read about replacing the limit switch and all of that which i will do evenutally. The trailer button does raise the trim. will i mess anything up if I use the trailer button to raise the trim in the water?

In all likelihood your trim limit switch is open (you probably know that), so if you would like the trim switch to work (without limit), just go in the back of the boat and locate the two black wires coming through the transom that go in to two connectors: one with a purple/white wire and one with two blue/white wires. Unplug the black wires and use a short piece of wire to jumper between the two connectors (you have just bypassed the trim limit). That should allow you to control up/down with the same switch. You could also have a misadjusted limit sensor. It's pretty easy to adjust. Look in Mercruiser manual #6.

Some trim switches are part of the handle and these can be pricey. This is why you see boats with a new switch, on the dash for trim. It has to be the right one. Momentary, on, momentary

the trim limit switch referred to in previous posts is located on the port side of the gimbal ring

rarely is the problem the op is having caused by the remote switch located at the helm

Thanks for all the help, I'm going to bypass the limit switch for now. I think that will be the cheapest solution.
