To add insult to injury, the local news last night was reporting that FEMA is denying any and all claims.

And on top of that, way to many people live in mobile homes.

Is there some kind of magnetic draw between mobile homes and tornados???

Because there are alot of trailers that get hit every year.

Those storms that came through were bad. Parts of Kentucky got hit really hard, especially a town called West Liberty. We even had a couple of counties in WV get hit by tornados. That is rare in this state. Luckily, there were no fatalities.

Unfortunately due to economics a lot of people in the tornado belt do live in mobile/manufactured homes.
I've lived in a few myself in my younger days, in college I ran out of one to a neighbors house when it started to rock and roll.
If the tornado is a direct hit you don't stand a chance.

That thought comes to my mind every season. Maybe the metal shells and conductivity?

Re: Tragedy close to home

I have a feeling the mobile home deal may be a bit more perception than reality because a mobile home can be trashed by winds that might only rip some shingles off a solider structure.

The wierdest deal I ever saw was in 1970, when I was selling mobile homes in Bellevue Neb right after I got out of the Air Force. On a Friday afternoon we delivered a 65x14 to a new park a little way south of the Platte River. We backed it on the pad, chocked the wheels and cranked the jack down. The setup crew was gong to block it up on Monday.

On Saturday night there were severe storms all along eastern Nebraska with a number of tornados. We got a call and went to look at the damage. The home we had delivered was shredded from about 3 or 4 feet up the walls. The appliances and furniture were mostly all there and still in their original positions. The jack was still sitting on the block we'd put under it and appeared not to have moved at all. About the top half of the mobile home was gone. The mobile homes approx 40 feet on either side of it were not touched, nor was any other home in the park. Just the one.

Thanks buddy, it was a little too close for comfort but we came out unscathed.

No worries at all now, I can hear Carribean Ocean waves crashing on the beach as I type!

That's good news to hear, Swabbie.:D

I've been in contact with a good friend (gwod phrien in West Indian) from TCI. I'm thinking about heading that way sometime soon myself. I know you and granny are looking foreward to your return. Say hi to the donkeys for me!

I just reread this a second time, the first time I thought maybe you had been out in the sun too long, why would we be looking forward to our return home??? You didn't know that I literally was listening to the waves crashing on the beach as I typed. :D

I didn't think to say hi to the donkeys but I did think of you as I was sitting on the beach drinking a ice cold Turks Head and staring at the water. It did occur to me several times while there that if I hadn't met you here I probably never would have found Salt Cay. You are now a legend in my family. Well we're now back home safe and sound, and our souls feel a little different after ten days in probably one of the more unique places on all of planet earth.

Your right, Swabbie....Literally! Guess I didn't realize the date. Welcome home, anyway.

You can't give me all the credit in your Carib choice. You gave details on what you were looking for.....and I just gave an opinion. The choice was yours! I'm sooooo happy for you two. I'm glad you adore the place as much as I do. Many happy returns and may our paths cross someday!
