Eight confirmed dead from this mornings tornado's. I live forty miles from Harrisburg, IL
where six were killed, reportedly two were children. I'm counting my blessings more then
usual today, the rotating storm passed just to the south of us and picked up steam as it
headed east. It woke me up at 4 am and hit harrisburg an hour later.

I'm off to buy a weather radio.

Amazingly the death toll has dropped to six. Looking at the photos
and considering the time of day it's almost unbelievable that more lives weren't lost.

Our iboats member grannyd (my s/o) raised her 2 daughters 7 miles away in Carrier Mills.
They went to Harrisburg for everything. She was in shock yesterday, she knows 2 of the deceased.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers everyone.

I am sitting here watching my roof shigles beign torn off as I type. (Gusts to 50 MPH) :-(
Hang on to your hat. We're in the 70's today, tomorrow and friday and then a even stronger cold front is coming into the midwest with weather potentially more severe then today.

Re: Tragedy close to home

Swabber I am between Mt. Vernon IN and Evansville just a little bit north. I came through here like it had to be somewhere in a hurry. took the roof off my old barn. No great loss but it will take a little time to pick everything up. Just glad no one on this side of the Wabash got hurt. I guess the exception would be Newburg which is east of Evansville. They had a lot of roof damage too. Southern Illinois is so sparsely populated and I know that the employment rate there is low. Just hope that individuals were able to keep up their home owner premiums. Doesn't do a thing for the loss of life though. Hats off to the workers in the hospital. They were treating people as the hospital itself was taking a major hit.

I'm in McCuthanville, a couple miles North of the airport in Evansville. We got lots of rain, but no damage. I actually slept thru most of it. I'm feeling pretty fortunate after seeing some of the pics in So Il.

This weather is getting more unpredictable and dangerous every year. Hopefully this is not a sign of things to come with climate change.

I think the weather radio is a good idea. We get tornadoes around here all the time in the summer but most of them miss populated areas luckily enough. In 87 we got an F5 that killed 27 people going through a city with 750,000 people. I'm picking up one of those radios next week as well.

I do not understand why there is no building code for ground shelters made of concrete in areas of the country where they are prone to have tornados. Especially when they are building new houses.

My only point ^^^^^ was no warning.

I'll still take it. Being helpless with forewarning has to be worse.

And on top of that, way to many people live in mobile homes.

I have to admit living with the threat of earthquakes does put you on edge at times.

Tornado's on the other hand and knowing that there is a real possible chance of getting hit every year. I think I would move. Just like earthquakes the not knowing were and when they could hit would put me over the edge.

I think like earthquake building preparedness something could be done to make the buildings more wind proof for tornado's and hurricanes.

Even with my comments I never worry really. I did some when we were young parents. Never cared before that at all, but after kids I did stress some. I don't know if it's because the kids are older or not, but I don't stress anymore (again) . . .

Thanks buddy, it was a little too close for comfort but we came out unscathed.

No worries at all now, I can hear Carribean Ocean waves crashing on the beach as I type!
