Hey guys,
First forum post! I have an older motor, I think about a 1998. Don't have the exact model in front of me and the motor is at the lake. I bought the boat last year and had the carbs rebuilt and it has ran great till this past Sunday.
We were out in the boat and it started running very low rpm's. I looked at the gas tank and it was sucked in on all sides. I unscrewed the cap and it went back to normal in a few seconds.
Ever since then, it will not idle, it will die.
It will run with a little bit of throttle, but no more.
Running full throttle and pumping the bulb it will sometimes run full throttle for a little while.
If you let it sit for a while, it will run better for one or two minutes, then go back to low rpm's. Still won't idle well.
We could smell gas around the engine. You know, sticking your head over the back of the boat looking at it with the cover off. I don't know if that is normal or not because I don't normally have the cover off with it running.
What I have found in the forums:
1. It could be the fuel line. And get a Mercury fuel line, not aftermarket.
2. I may have a hole in the fuel pump, which is a rubber diaphraghm.
3. It could be the carburetors.
I don't know what it is for sure. I appreciate any input you have before I start buying parts and calling someone to fix it. It CAN'T be that complicated, can it??
Thanks for your help,
Donnie
