Hello, does any one know roughly what the weight, with trailer a 24 ft sun tracker pontoon with inboard 3.0 4cyl motor is?Thinking of purchasing and I was hoping my Toyota Forerunner 2w/d with a 6cyl could handle it

Re: towing

It will probably tow it not sure about how well it will do so on long trips but short trips should be ok. Does the pontoon trailer have breaks? If not you will want to be thinking ahead when coming to a stop and following someone to close.

Re: towing

Towing it would not be as big an issue as pulling it up a wet ramp?

Re: towing

I wouldn't foresee much issue at the ramp. At least not due to a lack of power. There will be a lot of wind resistance from that thing on the highway though. I'm not sure what your vehicle weighs, but I'm guessing somewhere in the 4000-4500lb range. Personally, I'd want a heavier tow vehicle.

Re: towing

Your forerunner is is the 5000 towing range and a 24 foot boat with gear and sitting on a trailer should be around 4500 and that trailer will have breaks so you ill have a very small towing margin. If your experienced and its short tows on flat ground it will be ok, but if its on long tows it will burn out the truck or if you cant stand towing at 35 to 40 on the interstates you may wanna look into something bigger.

Re: towing

My parents had a 4wd 4runner and occasionally pulled a 21' deckboat. While it would do it, it was not happy about. With the short wheelbase of the 4runner they just don't tow well. It was a dog on anything but flat highway.

Re: towing

I have owned three different pontoons and obviously, towed all of them. I currently tow a 24 footer with a Chrysler Pacifca which does just great. Up hills, down hills, on ramp....no issues. We are, however, in a slip the last two years, so I don't tow much. I also towed with a Jeep Cherokee a 20 ft toon I owned and then later used a Suburban. They were all adequate, with the Suburban of course being the best.

The ability of your truck will also somewhat depend on what brakes you have, suspension, and how confident you are in your abilities. For shorter distances, you will be fine. You might have issues with some ramps with the 2wd.

The Pacifca seems to do OK on the ramps? Thinking of going with a 4x2 Toyota Highlander, which should be fairly similar, and have been holding off for this reason (ramp performance).

Re: towing

You'd be pushing it. That rig is 4000 to 4500 pounds and will feel like it weighs twice that at highway speeds. As others have said, occasional short tows on flat ground would probably be okay provided the trailer brakess (which your state likely requires on that rig) are in good working condition and you take it easy, but IMO your Forerunner wouldn't be a suitable tow vehicle for it.

Re: towing

I towed my 21' last season with a 2010 explorer and had no problem but it was rough on it. Even made one trip from Louisville Kentucky to Weiss Lake in Alabama. That being said I bought a Hemi Ram to tow with now.

Everything you here about the wind drag is true. On my bunk style trailer the deck of the boat was about at the roofline of my explorer so all of the top half of the boat is not shielded from the wind. I towed with the cover on after the trip home from Indianapolis because I lost like 6 of my cup holders on I65 (I really hope they didn't hit anything)

If you buy it , Make sure you tow it with the front door open .Less wind drag.

Re: towing

I don't think you will have any trouble at all. I just pulled A Bennington 2075 FSI with a 90hp. Yamaha over Donner pass with my wife's 2009 4 Runner with the 4-0 V-6. When I first saw how big the toon was, I wished I had brought my truck. These things are wide 8' 6", and really tall. She pulled great though, no sway and plenty of power. Some of the steeper hills I dropped to 55 but most of the trip cruised at 65. I got about 14 towing, which is about what my truck would get empty. Very impressed on what I thought was a light duty 4 wheel drive vehicle. I think it's rated for 5000 lbs. The trailer was a dual axle with surge brakes that were dialed in correctly. Dave-R
