Not an explorer. I have a 2002 with the towing package, 2" receiver from the factory. Ford adds different rear end 3.73, oil cooler, and stiffer rear suspendsion for the 5000lb. capacity. It would be best to go to a dealership and check the specs for the year of vehicle. Or go to Ford Truck Forum and join/read the discussions on towing and explorer sections.

Thanks for the insight. I can add an oil cooler but is the rear end ratio important for flat country towing?

Some may call me crazy but not only a tranny cooler but a temp gauge for the tranny fluid would be a good idea. Brakes can also be oversized with a towing package. The lower gear ratio will make a huge difference.

If you get a chance to trailer a load with a 3.55 and then a 4.10 rear end, you wouldn't beleive it. The upgraded suspension helps manage the weight movement as you go through town. I trailer a 6000lb boat with a 2004 expedition and it is rated at 9000lbs. I would rate it as acceptable not great. Lots of fudge figured into these tow ratings.
