Anyone tow with a VW TDI? What weight do you tow? Anything to watch for?

I have an 04 Jetta Wagon TDI and am wondering what is the max safest weight I can tow. Looking at purchasing a boat. (1989 15 ft Bayliner Capri).

Thanks.

Ask VW. I doubt that they will tell you over about 1,000#.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

The owners manual for a 2003 Jetta TDI wagon is rated for pulling 1500lbs with trailer brakes. Usually the tow rating for w/o trailer brakes is substantially less (more like half).

Remember, it's not so much the going to be concerned about...it's the stopping. A jetta isn't a very big car in the first place. Other factors to consider are if it's a wagon/sedan, manual/automatic, engine, and AWD/FWD.

I have a Subaru Legacy and it is rated for 1000lbs w/o brakes and 2000lbs w/ trailer brakes. It's also an automatic and AWD with 4 wheel disc brakes.

Whatever you find out or decide on, just make sure you are well under the capacity. Maxing out those numbers isn't a great idea to test on the road.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

My experience (and opinion) tell me that a 1,000 pound tow rating really just mean don't tow. I towed my boat for 2 seasons with my 2000 Buick Regal which had a beefy 3.8 V6. My boat is probably similar in weight to a 15 ft Capri. It just didn't go well. The car was clearly working pretty hard on hils and the braking was not that good. The worst part was launching/retrieving. With a car you just couldn't back the trailer into the water very far. After one particularly difficult day on the ramp we decided we needed a truck or SUV. Ended up buying an old full size chevy and haven't looked back.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

I used to own a Jetta TDI and even put a hitch on it. I towed a 500 lb atv on a tiny trailer which weighed less than 200 lbs (so I was at about 700 total).... That was the first and last time I towed with it.

With the abs it pushed the car and the rear of the car was not happy with the weight.

I had the power with my 5 speed but the handling was horrible and stopping was scary.

In my opinion I would not do it...... buy the boat and have a friend tow it or get a small pick up truck or mid size suv.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

Thanks for all the replies. VW says that they don't recommend towing (not sure why because the TDI has good pulling power/torque). I have the 5 spd manual and my hitch is rated for 2000 lbs. I have pulled a few utility trailers and a 14 foot aluminum before, but nowhere near the weight of the bayliner. I would fear being stuck at the launch trying to pull it out but just spinning the front tires. It might be time to get my ole chevy running and on the road, that means more money and more headache. The wife and I really like this boat though, ughhh decisions, decisions.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

I have a 2001 Subaru Forester (AWD/auto trans, 217000 miles) with which I tow our pop-up camper. The camper, ready to go, weighs exactly 1500 lbs. on our truck scale at work. I have plenty of power to pull it. Stopping is a different proposition.

The camper has electric brakes, so I have no problem stopping, but there is NO way I would even attempt towing it without the camper brakes. Neither would I attempt pulling our pontoon (20' MonArk); that's where I use my truck.

The Jetta just doesn't have the mass to handle that Bayliner, plus as you say it couldn't pull the boat up a ramp anyway. I think your decision to get the old Chevy running is a wise one.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

I realize that a 15 foot Capri isn't a real heavy boat, but the smallest vehicle that I would consider safe towing it would be something the size of a mini-van or a small pickup (Ford Ranger, Chevy S-10, etc.). In my opinion it isn't even just about power or the brakes, but the mass of the tow vwhicle. If going down the road at highway speed and a 1200-1500 lb (guessing that's what a Capri on the trailer would weigh) starts to sway behind a smallish car like a jetta then you are in for a wourld of hurt. I saw a guy towing 2 ATV's in a utility trailer (pretty close to the same weight as a Capri I would guess) behind a 4 door Chevy S-10 Blazer at about 60 mph when the thing started to sway on him. He damn near lost it right in front of me. Was in and out of 2 lanes until he got it slowed down and the trailer settled down. Bottom line: 15 foot Bayliner behind a Jetta - Not a good idea IMO.

However, if you do decide to try it, there are some things out there that help a lot in regard to towing. Consider these items

1. - friction sway brace (Prevents trailer sway)
http://www.etrailer.com/pc-SC~83660.htm

2. - load distributing hitch (evens out the load and makes the setup drive more level and safe. They make them for small cars and trailers too.
http://www.etrailer.com/pc-wdld~3204.htm

3. - trailer brakes. Obviously more stopping power. If you boat in fresh water then electric trailer brakes will work fine and are the cheapest to set up and IMO are better than surge brakes. http://www.etrailer.com/pc-TPB~23-47.htm

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

Although the TDI has a fair amont of power for the job, the problem really arises from the turbo. With heavy throttle while towing the engine would be under high boost pressure for long periods of time which makes for a lot of heat. While trucks are designed to handle that sort of duty, I doubt the Jetta is which is why they don't recommend towing.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

"Small" cars, especially newer ones, are a lot bigger and heavier than some people seem to think. The curb weight of the Jetta is nearly 3000 lb. Weight ratio wise, towing 1500 lb with a Jetta is no different than towing 2500 lb with a half-ton pickup. Nobody thinks twice about towing 5000 lb with a truck, so why is 1500 lb "way too much" for a vehicle that is more than half the size of the truck?

As for sway, the car will be able to handle the ~150 lb of tongue weight needed to prevent sway unless you're in the habit of stuffing the trunk to overflowing with heavy gear. If you use electric brakes, you can apply the trailer brakes without applying the tow vehicle brakes, which will bring things back in line if it does start to sway.

The biggest issue (assuming you don't do something silly like try to tow without trailer brakes) will be launch and retrieval. I tow a similar sized boat with a car, and the first time I tried to launch I backed up until the front wheels were almost in the lake, but the boat was barely deep enough to be able to start the motor. I had to back up quickly and slam on the brakes to get the boat off. It's a roller trailer too. I managed to make a few adjustments to lower the boat by 4 inches or so, and I put a 5 foot tongue extension on the trailer (see here). That solved the launch problem.

Retrieval can also be challenging. Try to avoid extremely steep ramps and less than optimal traction conditions. If the lakes you want to go to have paved ramps with moderate grades you should be fine. Otherwise, look for a bigger and/or AWD/4WD tow vehicle. Typical car manual transmissions have a fairly tall first gear, so getting started can be hard on the clutch and may lead to premature failure if you launch frequently.

Silvertip also brings up a good point about the TDI engine. These engines have fairly strict lubrication requirements to begin with, and high heat, high torque operation just makes the oil's job harder. Don't even think about using anything that doesn't meet the VW 505.01 specification.

Quite simply because a truck is built differently and those differences make it better suited for towing. First, a truck is a full frame vehicle, not a unibody. Other differences are type suspension, tires, brakes, longer wheelbase, not to mention that the truck is purpose designed for this kind of work. A car is designed to be a car.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

Hi All,

We have a 2006 Jetta TDI and tow small trailers without brakes and never have had a problem or thought any of the tows were unsafe.

Trailer #1 is a small 8' utility rated at 1080 # max weight. Usually this is very lightly loaded. It is the easiest to work with since we do not have ramps to deal with.

Trailer #2 is my wife's Yamaha SUV that weighs about 900 # plus trailer (~1200# total). The biggest problem is that we occasionally launch on a gravel ramp and have problem with traction - but others, i.e. P/Us, also have problems on the gravel. We tow at highway speeds and the Yamaha trailer is very stable at 65 MPH - never a twitch.

Trailer #3 is a Sears 12' Al boat/8 hp motor combination that I tow at highway speeds to many small Ohio lakes. It has to be weighted with concrete blocks in the bow as the tongue weight is too light.

Trailer #4 we towed once this year from the boat sling to the trailer storage yard (~1 mile). It is a triaxle aluminum Ez-load for our 32' Chris craft. I estimate that this trailer weighs nearly as much as the Jetta, but I never went faster than 20 MPH. The marina moves this trailer and boat with an older farm tractor and towing speed is about than 5 MPH (we know because we followed him this spring as the escort vehicle).

The Jetta has plenty of pulling power for these applications, but I would pass on trying to pull your Bayliner any distance at highway speeds and would anticipate even more issues if you attempt to launch/recover the boat.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

Ok, here's a few more thoughts. The issue with towing is not about "enough power" to tow. Today's vehicles have plenty of power, but other things need to be taken into consideration when towing. Torque at lower rpms is more important for towing considerations than hp or torque at higher rpms. Tow vehicles are generally rated with a higher torque at lower rpms so the motor can get the heavy trailer going. Transmission is another issue. Yes, once the vehicle gets going, it may not be a big issue if on flat surface, but with roads with hills and the like, the transmission may easily overheat. Brakes are another issue. If you plan to tow, expect to wear away your brakes faster, giving a higher risk of brake failure. Tires are another consideration and so is suspension.

Long story short, certain vehicles are just better made for towing than others. A minivan is better made for towing than a sedan (though I would limit what to tow with a minivan). Most pickups are better made for towing just because the primary use of pickups were for utility and work rather than everyday driving. SUV's tow pretty well for most "trailerable boats," but they are not pick-ups by any means. Engine power is not the only consideration. Be careful of tow ratings as well. Know what you are towing, how you will tow, and then get the proper vehicle or get the proper trailer/boat that your current vehicle could handle.

Just my $.02 worth.

Any newer diesel with turbo is gonna do fine towing! It will out beef any buick lol. One suggestion get a CRD liberty i wouldnt sell mine for less than 17k but ive seen them 11k in paper! I figured mine would go up in value from 26k! Brakes are you main concern as well as suspension on a rig.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

Well I passed on the Bayliner. I don't want to hurt my car plus I don't want to get in sticky situations. HOWEVER, I still want a boat so now i'm looking for something lighter like a 14-16 ft aluminum (side console preferably). I wanted the boat for fishing and the wife wanted one for cruising/boating. Looks like she's outta luck, too bad for her.:D

I know my VW can tow, but I don't want to push her to the limits.

Thanks for all the input.

Even a little tubby 16ft boat, trailer, motor, and all associated crap will go in to the 1500lb range. I wouldn't tow with a car like that, especially if I liked it. You need a beater truck or SUV to do your towing with.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

I'm sure that your car can handle a 14'-16' aluminum fishing boat...that is a standard fishing boat with bench seats and a 10-20hp outboard. Once you start getting into the boats with an open layout with decks and stuff, you are getting into heavier territory (you can hit 1500+ towing weight easily).

I used to have a 2000 dodge neon, manual transmission, and four wheel disc brakes and towed a 16' aluminum fishing boat and also a small 14' fiberglass runabout. Give it, the car had a 1500 pound towing capacity and the boats were no more than 800lbs with trailer, motor, gear, battery, and fuel. But it had no problem towing. I'm sure your wagon will be fine towing a small tinny as long as it is kept under the tow rating.

Re: Towing with 04 Jetta Wagon TDI

My wife has a 2000 VW TDI . VW rates the TDI in Europe to tow 3000 lb with brakes and 1000 lb without brakes. No towing is listed in the North Am owners manual so it will probably void your warantee if you still have any. We moved our Key West 176 to Florida from Windsor Canada last year with it.Aluminum trailer and boat probably weighs 2100 plus and 3 adults. It towed on level ground OK. The trailer had surge brakes and stopped OK. Main problem is the fuel mileage plummets to about 25 mpg. and we had to spin along in 4th to go about 65 mph. It would pull 5th but your foot was almost to the floor. We have a Jeep Wrangler at our house in Tampa and use it to tow locally.I doubt you would get up a boat ramp with front wheel drive without murdering the clutch.Because my brother in law was coming with us we used the VW my only other vehicle was an older F150 and I don,t own an oil well. We lost a wheel in Atlanta on Hwy 75(another storey) so my wife says never again and so we bought a second boat and have left it in Florida
