People always use to tow with cars. As long as it is within the limits of the car there should be no problems.

... but back in those days cars were a lot bigger, heavier, and rear wheel drive.;)

Not a car, but how about a unibody crossover SUV?

Tows quite well, and the fact that it's AWD really helps it get up slippery ramps. Technically the towing rating for the SUV is "zero" for the Redline model, but the towing rating for the non-Redline model with the same engine/drivetrain is 3500 lbs. The Redline package consists of ground effects, wheels, and 1" lowered suspension. Unofficially, it was not rated to tow because the factory tow package would not fit with the ground effects

I like the vette towing the boat too.

I sorta skimmed this thread - seeing lots of people concerned with having enough power to tow. That's the LEAST of my worries. The main concern is having enough weight in the vehicle to STOP the damn thing when you have some pace going. A few of those cars, maybe not unless there's some surge or electric brakes in the trailer axles.

I've towed once or twice with a car... (actually, I put on thousands of miles of towing with a car... :D )

If you compare that vehicle at its max tow rating (2000#) compared to an average 1/2 ton at its max, I will EASILY out accelerate and outstop the F150. Worst yet, I probably could out stop an unloaded 1970's era 1/2 ton! (those drum brakes don't do much...)

my uncles hauls his 17 foot princecraft with a mercury sable, basically the same car as yours give or take a few years. he has no issues what so ever besides the fact that it doesnt look right but it pulls fine.

Re: Towing a boat with a ford tarus

a Taurus v6 will pull it's butt off.. It's the SAME EXACT ENGINE as a he-man Ford Ranger V6 4X4... diff ratio means nothing with the newer electronically controlled transmissions nowadays..... but......think about it a minute... a Yugo, or Geo metro can take 5 very large 250lb people to the Chinese buffet up the interstate.....that's 1,300 lbs counting the diet cokes.... and, each of those cars could pull a 5,000 lb rig 60 mph, in time.. BUT.. a sharp, sharp surprise curve?.. forget it. surprise panic stop?.. forget it. You don't need a Kenworth to tow a 3k lb boat, as a lot of people here think that way, but you need to not worry about pulling, put your concern in STOPPING. And get a trans cooler....

How about an 82 Vette pulling a 82 Mastercraft?

VettepullingBoat.jpg

Don't know about quality, but a Vette' pulling a Stars and Stripes MasterCraft grabs points for style. That's sharp 82Collectors.

I go for overkill. I pull the 18' bowrider with an E150 V8.

Re: Towing a boat with a ford tarus

The Vette pulling the Mastercraft does get some looks! A couple of times from ladies at the ramp or a stop light and my wife was not amused. I have gotten many offers to buy the "set". I am the third owner of the boat and the owner before me towed this boat for many years with a ?74 Vette. I bet he got some looks also.

I agree with most of the posts above concerning pulling and stopping but the responsibility for safety resides with the driver. When pulling the boat if I was to drive like there was nothing behind me I will assure you something would get wrecked. I do not want to bend my car which I have had for 14 years, the boat of 7 years (anymore than I recently did with a big scratch down the side from not paying attention) or most importantly hurt anyone. Using a lot of caution and watching out for the other drivers before you get in a bad situation goes a long way. Long story short, know the limitations of your equipment and don?t get stupid.

Just what I came to learn over the years, as much as possible anyway.

Andy
