Hey all,
IMAG1085.jpg
I have a 12' skiff that I recently purchased that was restored last year. The owner used Pettit Easypoxy Bikini Blue for the topside, and not sure what was used on the inside or the bottom. I've put some chips/small cracks in the gunwale by trying to learn how to dock the thing (first time boat-owner), and would like to touch it up. I am going to buy a quart of the Easypoxy paint, but am not 100% sure how to apply it. Can I apply it right over the small cracks in the wood/over smudged paint previously there? In some areas the original wood is exposed, in some there is still a bit of paint on it. Do I need to do something special with the small cracks that developed? Anything I can really do?

Secondly, there is a small amount of water that sits in the stern which remains there for expended periods of time until it evaporates in the sun. I try to get as much out, but the drain holes aren't all the way to the floor so some residual pools there. This paint seems to be peeling off and not sure how long it's going to last. I have no way of matching the paint that was used inside the boat, and don't want to have to remove the paint, sand it down then re-paint the entire inside just for the feeling back. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your time!

Some close ups of the paint would help. Prepping for paint is essential. I'd highly recommend a light sanding with 180 grit and then wiping down with acetone. Once you post some close ups of the the paint we can possibly help you do some color matching with some rustoleum pro oil based paint.

Sorry about that, you're right I should have included more. Here you go!

At closer look, I don't think I can even epoxy these cracks because they are so small. Maybe just paint over them for aesthetics? I have included pictures of the dock damage, the chipping paint on the bow and the paint that has come off inside. You can see the standing water that sits in the bow as well. Should I be worried about this rotting out the wood? It usually evaporates here in Florida in a day or so, but it has been raining for 3 days and thus the water hasn't gone anywhere. Thanks.

My 1st boat way back in the 60's was a plywood hull very simular to yours. Seen the same problem then with paint chipping in tight corners like your 3rd picture. I believe it was from not getting the area sanded well before painting.

In your 4th picture the one crack looks to be the seam between the plywood side and the rub rail. The other crack is the board split or is the paint just cracked?

Based on what I'm seeing, I'd say my previous post pretty much covers what I'd do to touch up the areas of concern.

It looks like its a bit of the board itself, though it's not very deep.

Can I use the method you mentioned above without removing all of the paint? Can I just remove it where it came off there, sand it, Acetone, then repaint? No idea what the paint is, any thoughts?

Is the pooling water just rain, or is it coming in while you are under way (in use). I think you need a cover regardless (especially for a wooden boat out in the Florida elements...

Assuming that its not just rainwater that you are trying to get out, you can buy a little hand-held bilge pump at places like academy sports that will suck up the water and then you spit it over the side like a water gun... Or, you can install a little bilge pump (super easy) and it will get most of the water out...

On the paint, I don't think WOG is suggesting you strop the whole boat... You need to sand away all the peeling, chipped, brittle areas until you get to a good, strong, bonded paint, primer surface (which means you may go down to bare wood in the epicenter of the repair. Then clean it real good with acetone, prime any bare wood, color match as best you can and put on your top coat of paint.. If the area is not sanded and cleaned well, your paint is going to flake off just like it is doing now...

Hope this helps. Cool little boat by the way...

Yes, remove, sand with 80 grit, Acetone and Paint. I'd recommend using Rustoleum Pro Oil Based Acrylic Enamel. It's very durable and you can mix it yourself to achieve just about any color match possible.
