Well WTH? Now we're back to it being a TRANSOM plug....... REALLY frustrating trying to help if we can't get correct info

anyhow congrats on getting it out

Honestly, who cares. Plug in bottom or plug in the back, you have to remove it to get the water out. Its like debating how you say tomato

Yea the gimbal. I will need to do a lot of cleaning and probably painting. Its the saltwater that does it!

Ohh im sorry for the confusion. I dont think my boat has another plug but that one. But we were talking about ice in the engine compartment so if we had to conclude that i was talking about the transom plug.

Boats that size rarely have floatation foam.

Ok, after watching the video I'll make a few bets with you.

If the boat has any flotation foam it is now waterlogged

There is damage to the structural components under the deck

Any wiring, fuel lines, water lines, etc. routed under the deck is suspect

I think your issues with the starter / engine are going to be the minor ones in the long run. If it were me I'd be making a few strategic openings in the deck and find out what the hidden damage is.

As the water was coming down the ice started to crack and push down. When a part of the transom was visible and free of ice i used a metal pipe to tap on the engine bay to see it there was rot and it was hard as a rock. no soft spots from what i could feel and hear. And its not that much ice. Most wires are higher then the ice. Just the fuel hoses and other hoses are in the ice.

I think your right. WHen i drilled through the floor last summer to put in a hatch there was nothing inside. All hollow. Also when i tap on the boat all i hear is emptiness

Of course you wouldn't feel any soft spots - the rotten spots are still frozen hard as a rock....LOL.

Maybe no foam down there, but there are stringers. Waterlogged foam will kill performance because of heavy weight, but you can still navigate. Rotten stringers are another story!

Keep a hull wet and eventually the stringers, transom and floor (deck) will rot out. Put them in a winter climate and let them freeze and the freezing action literally blows the wood apart, accelerating the disintegration.

You may not have wires down there, but you surely have fuel lines to the fuel tank.

I really doubt that water surrounding a fuel line for a short time is going to matter much. Not even sure it would matter for a long time for that matter. If they are impervious to fuel, they are likely impervious to water! :)

where the plug is only matters in the fixing stage..... example, had you drilled a second hole in the transom that would be a much worse idea than drilling a second one in the bottom....

My personal bet is that the water may have NEVER fully froze.... I MAY have only frozen on the surface..... there is no doubt that soaking the floor and stringers under water for months absolutely DID shorten the life of the boat but I suspect that you will be just fine for a season or two.... just don't count on willing this one to the kids..... Even if this one IS ok for now, keep an eye open for your next one.

Ordinarily, that's probably true. But this wasn't an ordinary winter. Wet water isn't a problem, its the hard stuff that is.

I live in upstate NY, and wouldn't even consider outside storage for my babies. In the past 10 years the low temps around the boats rarely went below freezing, and even then only for a few nights. This year the boat temps went in the teens for days on ends. And that's indoors mind you.

Hopefully its no biggie. I have decided that if the boat needs alot of attention then its best that she goes in the dumpster and a new boat will appear. So we will see once the ice has melted.

Guys , ill get it done if its the last thing that kills me!! That whole entire plug is getting replaced! I am not drilling any new holes in the boat!

New to this thread, just read the whole thing. Whew !!

Tough crowd here.
I'm glad to see things are moving along for you, and that the temps there are warming up.

Anyway, I have a question for you.
Are you planning to be killed more than once? :)

Good luck, hopefully the damage will be minimal.

I think someone should go back and count how many time "I told you so" and "you have to remove the plug" were said.

This thread was interesting as the original question was how bad do you think my boat is and from then on it was a dog pile. Dennis never once lost his cool and was very appreciative of the advice even when some was a little more than he asked for.
