Now that summer is nearly here, I'd like to ask you fellow bass fishermen and women....
what is your favorite topwater lure?

My favorites are the Bass-O- Reno's, and Rapalas.

The bass o renos really nail them sometimes! Classic topwater plugs! I've caught more and bigger bass on this lure. Perch color seems to be the best.

Good fishing to all of you!

Re: Topwater Bass Fishing

My favorite way to topwater for bass is popping bugs on a flyrod, with a small wet fly on about a 12" trailer. Have doubled on bass that way.

On a baitcaster I still like the classic hula popper and the Jitterbug.

Buzz bait or a rapala (gold/black) jerk bait.
I also like to use a single blade spinner bait and work it just under the surface.
When they are hitting it doesn't matter what I use.
Nothing like a early morning topwater bite.
Really gets the adrenalin pumping. :)

Hand down is frogging on matted stuff. I caught a limit weight 15.75lbs yesterday all on Spro Bronze Eye frog. At the end of the day, I threw it on some matted scum/algae and a bull frog started chasing it and jumping on it. I said to my partner "watch this, I'm gonna catch that frog". He jumped on it, I set the hook and the knot slipped out, the line came flying back to the boat, my Bronze Eye was still sitting on the mat. A second later, that bull frog jumped on it again and there goes my Bronze Eye forever. :( My dumb arse should have retie after pulling all those bass out of heavy cover. Braided line knot tend to slip out from heavy duty usage. I'm gonna put super glue on the next knot.

I like pop r's as well as buzz bait. Buy like gonefishie said nothing beats a frog on matted grass:D, You loose more that you hook but the bass busting through the grass is just too cool.

I like the frogs in lily pads, too. I cast the frog, then quickly swim it onto the nearest pad. Wiggle it a little to get the pad moving. Then, after a few seconds, pop it off into the water. BAM! This works best in the early morning, though. Later in the day, the bucketmouths seem to move off to feed elsewhere.

Not if you got thick pads, they will stay underneath it all day. Pads field is like a buffet, they aren't going anywhere.

zara spook is my fav. was getting bass left and right the other evening on a toknocker. till a musky wanted it more then me. frogs are fun but got sick of not hooking more fish. a fluke with no sinker twitched across the pads then let sink in the holes is the way to go.

Lucky craft sammy is my top water favorite. But at 15 bucks a pop it hurts big time when you loose one to the toothy critters. The smallmouth seem to really like the sammy early on in the morning. The LM will hit em all day when it is overcast. Here is a photo of one of many smallie I caught last weekend with the sammy still hanging in his mouth.

I like Heddon's Zara Spook and Torpedo.. Spook (baby bass) is my favorite.

Muskyone- I change out the hooks to short shank 2x's w/split rings on the Spooks before they hit the water just for that reason.. I've had 3 of the 6 bends straighten out on those standard foil hooks they come with. A 100lb Fluoro leader goes up front when I know the snake is in the grass.

Never heard that one?
The glue doesn't deteriorate the line?
I may have to try that.;)

Lots of people add them to knots while using braided line. I haven't tried it but I wouldn't think the solvents in super glue would hurt mono, I suppose it would be wise to try it at home first.

Yeah, I've never heard of using glue either. Interesting concept though!
I think if you tie a good knot, with good line, there is no need for glue.

Nice smallie, FH.
I love catching smallies over bucket-mouth anyday! They fight harder and jump higher.

Like RCSConstruction says, the early morning bite is very good, and exciting.
I prefer the night bite though. Nothing like casting into total darkness, on a calm night, and hearing the boil as the bass takes your lure. Immediately following is the big tug on your rod. Set the hook and have fun landing it!
Gotta be more careful at night while landing and unhooking the fish.

On rare occassions, I've had bass hit the lure just as it hits the water after casting. Very exciting, and surprising too! I'm sure its a natural reflex, and they just inhale it. Very cool though!

This is why i love bass fishing so much!

I used to use super glue on mono. It never seemed to hurt anything.
