Re: topside leak

Garydoole,
From your question, I gather that you want to stop the water leak with a marine sealant? If so, marine grade silacone sealant is very good for this purpose. However, if you plan to paint that area, it will not hold paint, and if you intend to sand it, it will not sand smoothly. Another marine sealant you can use is 5200 polyurethane adhesive sealant. The silacone comes in clear, white and black; the polyurethane comes in white, black and teak.

I would suggest that you locate the entrypoint of the water, then place the sealant into the site, using the minimal amount to fill the space. If you use polyurethane you can neatly clean up the excess with oil base paint thinner available from your hardware or paint store. The silacone must be wiped up with tissue, but will leave a film over the surface which may gather dust over time and discolor the area. Once you have treated the leak entry, be sure to allow for the sealant to fully cure before subjecting the boat to water spray. Good luck, be safe!
