Re: Top 10 things to tell an 18 year old
whoops double post!!
whoops double post!!
Ron's point is one that I have struggled with a lot. I think that you do need to live for today . . . and that is somewhat contradictory with something else I agree with, which is plan for tomorrow. We do already have a savings one that I like because I wanted to include the time element in that message. Sooo . . . I just added two that I don't think have been mentioned yet. "You have a responsibility to be happy". This should cover the ultimate part of living for today. And "Always be honest with yourself" which is a big deal to me and addresses JB's number 6. If you are the problem, admit it. If you are the flake, don't blame it on your boss. If you are the reason for an argument with your spouse, don't blame it on him/her. If you are causing good things, take credit for them, especially with yourself.

We are now into the bump and adjust period. I have chosen to drop the Faith in God, which was a very tough decision. My reasoning is that I want this list to be taken seriously, and sadly the inclusion of a faith type message may limit how this whole list is received by some. This will not be an indication to my kid that faith is not an extremely important thing to be grappled with because of previous discussions. This is another reason that I was inclined to take it off. I also added a reference to Navigator's very wise warning about credit on items that depreciate. That should take care of credit cards.

1) Always be honest with yourself
2) Do what you say and mean what you say
3) Never make a major decision when you are: angry, horny, or hungry
4) Life is not fair
5) You know right from wrong, always have the convictions to do whats right
6) Don't step aside, step up
7) Live within your means and be very cautious about using credit for things that depreciate
8) Pay yourself first and start now
9) You have a responsibility to be happy
10) The most important decision you will ever make is choosing your spouse, the choice will account for 98% of your happiness or 98% of your misery

Rule change ALERT!!!

I don't have a pregnancy one here or a goal setting one yet and a lot of you have mentioned both. If we add anything, something has got to go or there needs to be a logical consolidation. So now if you have something to add, you need to consider what needs to be removed or adjusted . . .

BTW, I am going to print this whole thread for him. You guys are really good.Originally posted by Ron G:
Live for today, but save money for tomorrow.
I agree, these really are 11 - 20 . . .Originally posted by aspeck:
Actually, the top 10 would be the Ten Commandments. Maybe you should number these 11 - 20?!?!![]()
