As a follow up to the Stupid Teen thread etc. I thought we could try something that might be fun. Could be a dud too . . . we'll see.

I have a 17 year old who graduates from high-school this year. I have been saving a few life lessons that I want to tell him, either at graduation or his 18th birthday, not sure yet. There is such a wealth of knowledge and a variety of experiences and ages here that I thought a top 10 list from all of you iboaters would be really awesome. So here are the rules:

Post the most important lesson/message that you would tell a young adult. Let's try and keep them short and to the point to match the recipient's tolerance for this kind of stuff  You can make multiple suggestions. I will be the judge and jury (my thread and my kid ;) ) and I will take those that I feel are worthy and post them in bold as a growing list until we get to 10. Depending on the activity at that time, we might continue. It would be possible then that one that made the list could get bumped by one of better quality. Let's try and keep them applicable to both a son and a daughter. If that doesn't work we'll split them into a male and female version.

Hopefully, what we will end up with is an iboaters top 10 list of the most important things for young adults to take with them on their new life journey.

Have faith in God.
Most likely not what you had in mind so here is another one.
This is something that my Dad told me and I never forgot it.
"If something is worth doing its worth doing right"

Always wear clean underware. You might have to go to the hospital. This was Grandmas favorite, and she meant it.

LOL @ KIZ. This could go really quickly. I was hopng that it would last a while . . .

OMC's could be the only one actually, although I hope it is a given. We are not regular churchgoers though, so a little emphasis is appropriate. I see your edit now and you are correct, but for now it is on the list. I'm gonna think about the do it right thing, may make it.

Frogger's about integrity and reputation is a great one too.

1) Have faith in God
2) Do what you say and mean what you say

Both of these were told to me by my Grandfather. So far they have worked for me.

Plan your work, and work your plan.

When it comes to realestate there are three things to remember;
1-Location
2-Location
3-Location

Along the lines of what OMC said, "there's never time to do it right, but there's always time to do it over."

Oh, and if yours doesn't make the list immediately, it could be:

a) that it sucks :D
b) that I am having trouble keeping up
3) that I am actually doing something else

The AV8er's are good I am thinking how to consolidate . . .

1. You will learn twice as much with your mouth shut and ears open than the other way around.
2. Work creates luck the harder one works the luckier they get.

I heard both of those pearls from my Grandfather

When opportunity knocks, it is ussualy wearing overalls and looks like work.

Weigh all your choices against your values and and choose accordingly. You may face a short term dissapointment but you will always be able to live with yourself.

Never make a major decission when you are: angry, horny,or hungry.

Life is not fair. Get used to it.

You will NOT make $60,000.00 a year right out of high school. You won't be vice president with a company car until you earn both.

If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss.

Be nice to nerds, chances are you will end up working for them one day.

Man, this is tough, but you guys obviously get it!

1) Have faith in God
2) Do what you say and mean what you say
3) Never make a major decision when you are: angry, horny, or hungry
4) Life is not fair

I think #3 is good, could get bumped, but it is valuable. I got #4 from my mom constantly. Great one though . . .

BTW, Reel Poor's are more practical than life lessons. Extremely good advice though!
