too much smoke ?

started 2001 90 johnson and seemed to be smoking more than normal,had read about vro sucking air on gas side.how would you verify and locate air entry?

If it has been sitting awhile, the smoke is normal. <br /><br />A short section of clear hose clamped at the engine end will reveal air bubbles if there is any air intrusion.<br /><br />You will also get too much oil if your fuel line, fuel pickup or fuel vent is clogged.

Was it winterized? It takes awhile to burn that oil out. What brand of oil are you using? It seems some brands of oil smoke more than others.

didn't winterize,garage kept and started acouple times onwarm days during wintrer.used omc fuel stabilzer in tank at max. concentration.

Even just starting it, you're not burning all the oil out. It's like idling all the time, it builds-up. You have to run the boat at planing speed to suck it all out of the exhaust. It'll smoke like crazy for the first hundred yards or so and diminish to normal. <br /><br />When you do as you do during the winter, choke the motor to death instead of shutting it off (then don't forget to turn off the key). That gives the cylinders a good dose of oil. Sometimes I do that instead of using fogging oil where it's difficult to impossible to spray into the air intake(s). <br /><br />Check all your fuel joints for leaks, snug-up clamps where you can. Don't use metal screw clamps on plastic fittings. Air leaks in the fuel line can cause overrich oiling.
