Re: too much boat?

Well if he would need to add a couple hundred for the smart tabs then I would suggest upgrading the motor now then trying to enhance a weaker motor.

I dont have the same boat but my boat specs are close to the one your looking at.
I have a 16' bow rider with a dry weight of 700lbs with a 70 hp Johnson on it and I would still like more power. But mine is a 2 stroke and an older model where they measured HP at the crank and not the prop.
Hope that helps.
Good luck with your first boat!

Upgrading the motor, he stated, is $500. Smart tabs would only be about $100. Plus, the $500 is only going to get him 10 horse. That's not going to make much difference, especially when going from THAT 40 to THAT 50 is just a tune, MAYBE a few things to make it breath better, which, as stated, isn't going to make it jump out of the hole any better. That 50 is only going to gain on the upper end of the rev range. If $500 would get him from a 50 to a 90 then I'd agree with you. But 10 horse, on the top end, is useless to him. If he's at the end of his budget but doesn't want to downgrade the boat, I don't see any other affordable option.

i think it would be more a thoguht of what do you want out of the boat. do you want a fast boat to ski or a boat that will get you where you're going? more speed or power is nice but is it necesary for what you want to do?
my boat is rated for 90 and is wearing a 65. she goes plenty fast for me.

You have stated the the package is a 2 year old "New" showroom model. For whatever that is worth. So now they have been sitting on it that long. Why? Underpowered? Minimal inventory?

Tracker Boats does the same thing. They underpower models a a reasonable base price to get "New" boaters into them.

There very well may not be a performance issue with this setup but remember that they are still triing to sell inventory. If they are truely interested in a sale at the offered price then they need to put it in the water for you to test drive. That way there will be no quessing or conjecture!

Re: too much boat?

Another thought.

I own a 14' Lund DLX with steering console which I purchased used w/o a motor. It is rated for a 35hp. The 1st year I had it i had found a very nice 18hp for a very good price and used it for half the summer until I was able to locate a 35hp.

With the 18 hp most of the time I was alone in the boat with a light load and it performed very well that way. Until I started loading it with gear and carrying extra people. It would still perform alright that way on the smallish lakes that I fish but was slow to get up on plane loaded. Also really couldn't see any top end difference between the 2 different motors. All the difference was in medium speeds up to planing speed.

So you need to consider what types/sizes of water you will be on, what kinds of loads you will be carrying and what is it's primary purpose. Fishing, trolling, cruising, skiing?

That boat will be fine. I have a 16' bass tracker 1990 model with a 40 hp johnson and a 78" beam. My boat gets on plane quickly and will do what everyone is telling you about 28 non gps. My boat is set up the same as yours. I love the boat because you can go on small lakes and on rivers. My boat is easy on gas and is aluminum as well. If you have kids you can take them out and not feel like they are going to fall out like most bass boats are. I go out and pull tubes with friends as well as knee boards. I also wakeboard behind my boat if my buddy with a mastercraft isn't available to go out. I weigh around 200 pounds and it pulls me out of the water with a little struggle but it does it and it is fun. I know it doesn't throw a wake but it was a good investment for me. You will have to decide what your needs are and buy accordingly. You will not be the fastest boat on the water but you will have just as much fun. The v hull will ride nice on rough water. good luck on your decision.

I would probably pass on the deal and go find a nice, used boat. If you are financing, that might change your circumstances a bit, but you can still find "more bang for your buck."

Re: too much boat?

thanks for the info. dont need alot of speed just want it to be a sluggish dog. primarily using for fishing on the bay and inladnd lakes. maybe pulling the kid around on the tube. if it will do that without a problem and be able to plane easy enough with a couple people in it ill be happy.

Put a kid on a tube and a couple of people in that boat and I am pretty sure you have got one sluggish dog. Of course a lot will depend on the prop set up you run.

Again I really suggest a test drive. The only way to know for sure how it performs and whether you're going to be happy with it. Afterwards is too late!
Shouldn't cost you anything but a bit of your time and if the dealer isn't willing to do that then I'd let'm sit on it for another offseason and lost sale.

Ask yourself this. Would I buy a new car w/o a test drive?

Re: too much boat?

I've got an older 55 on a boat rated for a 90 max. When the original 50 died and I was looking for a new motor, my girlfriend wanted me to get a 90.

I like to flats fish and the thought of a heavier 90 meant I couldn't go as shallow, plus it was going to be much more expensive.

Re: too much boat?

I should add I'd stick with a two stroke on a smaller boat because of the power to weight ratio.

Parts are also really cheap when compared to 4 strokes or larger engines in general
