Re: Tohatsu Motors Rating

I like to buy American when possible. However I don't think it is possible to buy an American-made four-stroke outboard. I just bought a 2001 Mercury four-stroke 9.9. The powerhead is made by Yamaha in Japan, which probably explains why the motor came with NGK sparkplugs and a DENSO oil filter. The lower unit I quess is made by Mercury in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. I understand that Evinrude four-stroke powerheads are made by Suzuki in Japan. Are there any American-made four-stroke outboards? Also, I think that it is now illegal to sell two-stroke outboards in Canada and California.True?

no the direct injected 2 strokes are still legal in california ,though i do not know about canada .i have not heard either way .and yes suzuki does make the johnson 4 strokes from 40 h.p. and up .i am not sure about the smaller 4 strokes they may make their own but not positive.but their ficht motors and mercury optimax motors are just as clean as every one elses 4 strokes .

I have owned 5 nissan /tohatsu motors and found them to run better and last longer than the higher priced motors. The differance is better engineering. With the internet, parts are one or two days away by fedx. This has been alot faster than my local merc. dealer. My guess is soon they will all come from Japan anyway.

Tohatsu makes a LOT of motors and motor parts. You get it wrapped in many covers.

As everything turns Global, less seems genuine American. On the other hand, American operations own a lot of companies world wide, so... who owns Volvo Cars? Ford! Who owns Jaguar Cars? Ford! Who owns 25% of Mazda Corp.? Ford! Who sits on Saab? GM! And so on.

It might not be 'all American', but it certainly is not 'all anything else'.
