Drive Shaft Housing Rebuild

Drive Shaft Housing Rebuild

Have made rebuilds of that type using a 2 part mixing cement, comes as a tape, mix well untill color is uniform and product is soft and moldable, clean well related area, apply product and with fingers shape to match original design, cut, clean leftovers. Let dry, being a low pressure area, water flow is plainly guaranteed...

Hmmm...worth a shot I guess before I drop $250 on a new housing. I'm going to have it apart tomorrow to assess the overall condition of the powerhead, and I'll put some thought into this. It seems like a band aid fix at best, but I'm glad to hear that it can actually work. I've heard some pretty remarkable stories about Marine Tex gray putty.

Thanks for the tip.

The Company that produces locally this product calls it "Moldi Mix" once completely hardened it's strong as a solid rock, it's use to repair car radiators, general piping, reconstruct engines, machine parts, you name it. Post some pics of the missing part to have a close look..

If you need a Long housing, order 3B2S611921, DRIVE SHAFT HOUSING L, $173.44 MSRP (discountable) from any dealer (including me).

OK, great. I found one at $150ish...way better than the $240 I was looking at. I think I'll just go for it. While I love cheap fixes, I just don't see myself being able to seat a gasket on a gob of epoxy. Many thanks.

Well, I'm throwing in the towel on this one as I think I'd just be throwing good money after bad.

Not surprisingly, three of the powerhead bolts were frozen and the heads sheared off. As I was trying to drill the starboard front one out, the whole corner piece, including the block base, came right out:

Here's where that was:

Here's a PO's band-aid fix on the base gasket:

If anyone wants any parts from this, assuming that I can remove them, please PM me.

Bummer, but not a huge financial loss. There's so much salt inside the block of this thing that it's pretty much garbage. I will say this, however: this engine, had it been properly maintained, would go for another 10+ years in fresh water. I'm pretty impressed with the engineering of the internals on this thing.

Cheers guys.

EDIT: A couple more photos. The pan:

The block base. I can't believe the amount of buildup on the drive shaft area.

Too many oyster crackers with the tomato soup? It's just crumbling away, Chem. Maybe you can recover a little bit by selling off the usable parts. Sorry it turned out this way. :blue:

Ya, thanks, but no biggie really. More wasted time than anything. I'd love to find a nice, well cared for one and keep this for parts, but these are super rare around these parts.
