Hi, I am having the same problem. My 1986 M18C2 had the same coil/cd combo in one unit - it is NLA. The parts list shows separate coil and CD, so I bought both and installed - but there is a problem. There were wires with matching colors, so it was easy to connect. I tested for spark by grounding the sparkplugs against the block - no spark. I decided to install sparkplugs and try to start it - it started, but when I try to advance the throttle it starts missing-sounding on one cylinder. It will idle, but starts a rhythmic "panging" with more gas. I've ohm tested wires, new plugs, rechecked grounds, etc. I can't figure it out.

I should add that the parts numbers I found were 362 06050-0 for the coil and 362-60060-1 for the CD. The CD I ordered was a 362-60060-0 Is there a difference?

Sounds like you also have a fuel issue. I would clean the carb. Properly.

Thanks. The M18C2 is new to me. The old coil/CD worked, but was cracked. The motor ran perfectly with the old coil/CD. I left it on the stand with the same fuel connected. I installed the new ignition parts and it runs as described. Sounds/Acts electrical. Seems the spark is very weak, but will make it run at low speed. Maybe the CD is the wrong one. Does the slight difference in part number mean anything (-0 at the end vs -1) as shown in parts book? Has anyone else up graded from the original koukusan denki CD ignition to the 2-piece coil and CD?

the -1 is just a newer revision. That motor is so old, it's amazing you can get _any_ parts for it.

The M18 is old, I wish it was a new one. In Alaska we sometimes have to work with what we have. I see a coil/CD combo for sale for 9.8? and 8hp Tohatsu. Would those work on my 1986 M18? Could the aftermarket CD $30. be bad? All the wires on the CD had matching wires on coil and harness, but the male/female connectors did not match with the blue and red and black wires coming from the flywheel. I changed male to female connectors on the CD to match harness connectors. Odd that I could never see a spark when grounding the plug against the block - yes paint removed. I even used a jumper-wire to ground plugs - nothing. Installed plugs - starts, but will not run well, sounds like out of time or missing on one cylinder. Has anyone replaced the Koukusan Denki CD ignition with the modern 2-piece set up? It will idle, plus a little faster, but starts an odd "pang, pang" sound at same higher rpm - very consistent. Maybe bad timing, but close enough to let it idle? I know it sounds like a fuel problem, but..

I would ask the aftermarket dealer about compatibility. You can use a timing light to verify timing.
