I am trying to replace my water pump on my 9.8 Tohatsu 2 stroke, i can't quite figure out how to remove the roll pins from the shift assembly to fully remove the lower unit. Do I remove the top roll pin or the bottom roll pin? What gear should the lever be in for removal of the lower unit?

Also what size pins are in the shift assembly and what sized punch is needed to remove them properly, other than that i can do everything else required to redo the water pump and impeller. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

You can get the ss 3mmx10mm pin at any Tohatsu/Nissan dealer. Any decent punch will work; Tohatsu sells both the removal and installation punches at a reasonable price; I have a custom-made set of channel-locks with the punch on one jaw, and a corresponding slot cut in the other jaw that makes the job a breeze.

You would typically remove the lower roll pin, leaving the coupler attached to the powerhead end. That way, if you want to pull the cam rod bushing to install new o-rings, nothing is in the way. Since the linkage is exposed on the 9.8, the gear selector position isn't critical; just realign the rod and coupler at reassembly, and push the pin back in with channel lock pliers.

got it figured out eneded up using a 3/32 punch to get the roll pin out, picked up the new pin at a local dealer, pump is changed and the engine is ready to get back on the water with new plugs and gear oil. Thanks for the help and info guys. Also i couldn't find a rusty nail that would work for the application :)
