you have to disconnect the shift rod, it comes up just beneath your bottom carb, put a bolt back in to hold the foot until you have it disconnected.

Yup, and then it's going to be REAL FUN getting that shift rod reconnected when you're done.

do you need to remove the carbs? Is the shift rod helt in place by pins or a bolt? Dose the shirt rod come out with the unit?

Re: 1985 Evinrude lower unit removeal

In my case (on a '81 Johnson 90) no I didn't remove the carbs, although I did have to remove some fuel hoses that were in the way. There's one bolt that holds the shift rod end in the linkage, and yes, the shift rod will come out with the lower unit.

Getting that bolt back in was the hardest part of the entire process. I finally took a piece of 14 ga. house wire, put a loop in the end so I could keep the bolt from falling out of my socket wrench, and once the bolt had gone in a few turns pulled the wire out.

Thanks for the heads up I going now to try and remove that lower unit.

Got it off and now I'm ordering a shop manual from here...I have no idea how to adjust the shifting rod on this thing it doesn't look anything like the posting I found on here. May just take it in and have it rebuilt by someone who knows what they are doing.

thanks for all the help

if you do not have some know how about gears and bearings and stuff a gearcase rebuild is a little tough to get right and can result in short life of some very expensive gears. what is wrong with your gear case anyway??? maybe a used one would be less costly

I need to rebuild the skeg, I also need to remove my lower unit...remove the "gears" and do some welding.

we welded the prop back together today

I just got a used foot in good condition for $150. seems like a better way to go to me. keep your old foot for parts.

i would also not use a welded up prop unless you are careful to make sure it is balanced

Re: 1985 Evinrude lower unit removeal

I'm going to need to replace the lower unit after all there was a crack in the housing letting water into the gear case.

Next questions...my lower unit has a one pice drive shaft, I have forund a new lower unit (after market) but the unit has a two pice drive shaft: question number one are these units interchangable? Has anyone used one of these after market units and if so are they any good?

I would like to find a use one for $150 (wow) but just my luck it would not work for long, that is why I am leaning towards a new or refab.

Oh my reverse gear was not working that is why I pulled the LU.

You have to remove the shift shaft screw at the bottom of the power head, it's attached to the shaft going toward the lower unit, and there is one bolt in the center not just the ones on the sides. Don't PRY it should slide with no, or very little effort its heavy have 2 people the first time. Also get an owners manual for your motor it has a world of answers and there only 35 dollars on avg.

I need to know how long the shaft is (a 20" or 25") I measured the shaft from the end to where the water pump bolts to the case and I get 22"?

Was told that if the modle number has a L in it it is a 20" (long) and if it has a X in it it is a 25" (extra long) is this true my has the L in it?

yes L is a 20" shaft. the L should be just before your year code which for an 84 would be CR. if you can find a blown engine the gear case may be ok, check the oil for water and look at the magnet for a lot of shavings, some shavings expected. then you got a whole parts motor usually for around $200
