Tohatsu 9.8 two stroke is it worth it?

I'm looking to buy a 9hp outboard, a local fellow has a 1996 Tohatsu that looks almost brand new. He's askig $1,000... What do you think, is it worth it?and how does this motor compare to its competitors?

The first thing to consider is local dealer service and parts availability.
You might do a search right here for Tohatsu posts.

That's high for a 9.8. Somewhere in the 7 to 8 range would be more realistic. Don't worry about parts or service availability as Tohatsu is much more common than say Suzuki or Honda.
