Do I need to empty the oil out of the lower unit before dropping it to replace the impeller?

No. You do want to change the LU lube annually, though.

Don't replace just the impeller. Do the complete wp kit, available from any dealer. While at it, pick up a Factory service manual on the MFS 4/5/6.

Thanks for the info. I do have the complete kit and the Tohatsu shop manual. The translation from Japanese to English, at times, is not real clear.

My 3 year old MFS4A was barely flowing water so I assumed the impeller was shot. I had been ignoring the owners manual recommended annual replacement regimen as you would normally do when the manual suggests bringing the engine to an authorized dealer for impeller replacement. Clearly this should be a owner servicable item but it's non-trivial. Fortunately the mechanic I spoke to said "yeah, I almost never have to replace those unless they have run dry for an extended period." Really? So it turns out the impeller is fine. A common problem with these small Tohatsu outboards is the raw water drain hole gets plugged up. It took a couple tries but a good shot of WD-40 or similar up in the water exit hole and it's started flowing normally. Eventually I'm sure I'll have to replace the impeller but that wasn't the problem this time.

OD.
