Re: Tohatsu 50 TLDI running rough

OP, and GURU, it appears the problem with my motor was the battery. It was doing the same thing yours is/was BobGlover.

The battery the Tohatsu dealer installed when I bought the motor appears to have been the problem all along. I put 2 hours on the motor today after swapping the battery with a high quality 930 CCA battery and couldn't make it run rough or miss.

Glover, I see your battery has already been discussed. Hopefully you are smarter than me and tried a different battery already. I decided to suffer over a year of headaches first.

We tell people 1000 CCA is the minimum size battery you need in a Yamaha HPDI, Mercury Optimax or a TLDI Tohatsu/Nissan. The engine will start on virtually anything which throws people for a loop when we tell them the battery is the issue. All three of those brand/model's require additional amp's to correctly initialize the ignition system. The engine's will start and run (like crap) on anything that will operate the starter. But, the ignition system requires a minimum of 700 amps on startup. We tell people 1000 because every month your battery die's just a little more (like my patience for small children, cats and democrats) . If you start out with 1000 you should be okay until the battery itself goes bad in two to three years.
