Should not be a big deal for your local mechanic to service it under warranty -- as I mentioned, he may not push you to the front of the queue, but it should not be a problem. Please report back the findings, as that banging is definitely not normal.

Re: Tohatsu 25hp - banging noise at high throttle during break in

Circling back here to close the loop on this thread with an update. I have my boat back and all is now well! It appears the issue was indeed to the Rev Limiter (kudos to Star for getting that one!) The dealer was fantastic. He tested out the boat, heard the noise, and came up with a couple of theories: 1) he thought the rev limiter might be kicking in prematurely, so he got a replacement unit from Tohatsu and installed that, 2) because my boat was so light (14' alumacraft), he thought it was over revving, and going up on the prop pitch would help, so we did that.

Long story short, those two changes have resolved the issue. I took the boat out yesterday and she ran great! A little slower coming up on plane (as expected with the higher prop), but otherwise perfect.

Thank you for all the help on this forum! I have found a great dealer, and will bring all my business back to him.

Glad it worked out for you. In our shop, we would have installed a test tach before changing the ECU, and then changed prop pitch accordingly. Faster fix, more accurate, easier to install, and cheaper, too.
