To build or not to build?

Just got a great deal on a 19ft sea lion last time I was home and Im not sure what to do with it. I got the boat for about half of what I would have paid for the motor so Im ahead of the game. Problem is the floor is soft and needs to be replaced and from all my research here Im sure it will need new stringers to and we may as well plan on doing the transom while we are at it. So we are looking at a complete rebuild. I have done a lot of other work on boats in the past with the help of everyone here and this will be my first complete rebuild with your help.[Thank you all in advance] The question bouncing through my head is wether to rebuild this boat or just find another hull to transplant all the good stuff onto. Im sure most of us know we can find a hull on CL fairly cheap but for all I know that might just leave me doing just as muck work in a couple years when the new problems become apparent. Just wondering what I could expect for a ballpark total cost of redoing floors, stringers, and transom on a 19ft boat. I am not worried about the time or labor as that will just make me love the boat more and I don't need a full breakdown or anything, like I said just a ballpark figure for materials. Thanks

Re: To build or not to build?

Thanks woodonglass, that's only slightly more than I was expecting so I gueas its build we shal. Im sure you know your name has come up more than a couple times in all my reaserch and I hope to get more input when the project gets going. I have seen your illustration on how to design and build transoms stringers and decks and am left with two questions, 1 what is penut butter 2 how do you secure the stringers to the transom? I think I have a good handle on the rest of it but Im sure more questions will come as I get into this project.

Peanut Butter Recipe

You attach the stringers to the transom by butting the ends of the stringers against the transom, using PB to form coved fillets and then tabbing CSM to the transom and bottom of the hull. Kinda like this...

Drawing is NOT so good but hopefully you get the idea.;)

Re: To build or not to build?

Hi and welcome joebob14,
Nice looking boat you got yourself...
I would like to come aboard and watch, learn, cheer and help...
Being as you are close to water, check around and ask around...you might be able to score a local marine supplier where you can get your materials at very close to wholesale prices and not have to pay any shipping or hazmat costs..
That will go a long way to staying within your budget...
Good luck and have fun!

Re: To build or not to build?

tahnks gt1000000, I have a marine surpluss aout 10 miles from me. I cant stand the atitudes down there but they usualy have good prices on just about anything I need. I just got home today after about a year long stint driving laung haul trucks. I think thats the only reason my wife let me get the boat as she knew a project would bring me home. A few days to get things back to normal at home and the deconstruction will begin with lots of pics.:photo:
