You guys and gals get your sugar coated explanantion and instructions from the Dept of Veterans Affairs in the mail yet?Got mine today.I feel very confident in knowing that the affairs office feels that the perpetrators(their wording) didn't realize what they had stolen.I got a hunch they(him, her,it) probably know now.I'll also sleep better knowing that the affairs office is implementing safeguards to prevent this from ever happening again. I thought it only needed to happen once.

Re: To all vets

Got mine a few days ago. I don't believe a word in it. It's way too big of a coincedence that the computer was taken home and then his home was burglerized and the computer stolen. BS!

DR,In the second paragraph of the opening page where it states,"Authorities believe it is unlikely the perpetrators targeted the items because of any knowledge of the data contents.",I'm wondering if this is a Freudian slip on words,as in knowledge of more that one (perpetrator) in this supposed ongoing investigation, just poor proofreading,or eluding to the ex-employee and the alleged burglar?

FIL got his yesterday.
Like some others, sounds fishy to me that it gets stolen twice the same day.

I'm not sure what to do, other than keep an eye on things. Can they really get to stuff like 401k's and bank accounts? Or is it limited to opening fraudulent accounts in your name? Is there anyway to stop all new accounts without authorizing each one individually like with a password or something?

Re: To all vets

Got mine last week and figured the letter was sent from the guy who stole the list just letting me know that he has my personal information. I was pretty impressed that the VA tracked me down after moving 5 or 6 times since I got out of the military.

Re: To all vets

If you were discharged before '75, your info was not necessarily included. If you didn't get a letter, you may be okay. Might want to call just to be sure. Your vital info is sitting in a box in a warehouse somewhere hopefully being guarded by soldiers with guns. :D

That's kind of scary DR.....hate like hell for some butt wipe to get hold off my "stuff". Especially at my age and retired. Thanks for the heads up.

Re: To all vets

Not trying to add gasoline to a fire , but on AOL headline this morning was a short story about a woman in Califonia whose social security number was traced to some 86 different claims in 16 different States. Most of which were used as job application and tax history used fraudulently by mostly illegal aliens. The IRS waved her tax burden of around a million bucks. If these stolen, or heaven forbid, sold military data ended up in Mexico or in the hands of someone with a similar intent, this could end up as a large can of worms.Guess all we can do is just stay tuned.

Re: To all vets

I got mine about two weeks ago. I'm not that worried. The person who took the data home had been doing that for sometime. It was on the harddrive of his laptop, which he took home everyday.

I'm hoping that whoever stoled the laptop just sold it after cleaning the drive. But, if he looked for any financial info (or porn :D ) before selling the computer, we could be in trouble.
