TNT manual release screw broken, how can I get it out

Hey I just got through fixing trim motor and swapping it to a good spare TNT, but the manual release valve screw head was already broke and I tried to make a slot in it but no joy. I got good spare parts but don't want to go to taking more things apart anymore. Do any of ya'll know of a good way to get that thing out? Also should the trim cylinder have alot of spring to it? Like right now the ram is fully extended and I can push it in and it'll spring back out. The tilt cylinder works fine, but I need to fix the manual release and get more fluid to get it back to full operation.

What type of year, or make of TNT are you dealing with, some of those valves are held by a C-clip. That could be why it is broken.

I thought about using an EZ out, I just wasn't sure if it was a good idea messing with it like that and screwing up the pump

It's off a 76 model I think, I got it from bubbakat. one half of the slotted head was broke and I couldn't turn it with a pair of pliers and the other half broke off. it's just an aluminum screw with rubber seal and o-ring on it

Hey bubba nice to hear from ya, tht TNT cleaned up nicely, and I hit it with a little PB Blaster but it's just being a little stubborn. I've fought with worse things than this, the real pain is that these TNT units have to replaced with motor and reservoir as an assembly, about 250+ dollars so I'm trying to make use of everything I've got in parts. Those CMC units still look nice though.....Mike

That valve is not held with a C-clip. If you can, center punch the broken valve as close as you can. At an auto store, or machine supply store, buy a 1/8 in. left hand drill bit. The bit itself may unscrew the valve if it's your lucky day. Of course! this takes a drill that will turn counter-clockwise. If you try an easy-out, go very carefully, as those things snap like glass. You will have about 3/8 in. before you get critical with depth.

Mikey,

I agree with R. Get a opposite rotating drill bit. Is there enough room to get in there with a dremmel and cut a new groove?

Mark, unfortunately I tried the dremel but it didn't work out. I sure hope someone in the past didn't think they needed to use any threadlock.

Re: TNT manual release screw broken, how can I get it out

nope not yet, been trying to grind it down some with dremel, not much space to work with. if I can get it ground down to biggest diameter portion of screw I might could get a slot cut into it and have more leverage. the original narrow part of screw that was slotted is just to soft to manipulate. I really need it to get this TNT operating correctly.
Also should the trim cylinder have alot of spring to it? Like right now the ram is fully extended and I can push it in and it'll spring back out.
does that sound normal? I'm thinking it's got airlocked, because it'll compress a little then come back up, instead of being fluid getting pushed back to the reservoir. Any ideas?

Re: TNT manual release screw broken, how can I get it out

I have the same problem with my TnT and was wondering, if I can manage to get the screw out, where do i get a new one? I stopped at my local omc dealer and they said that they cannot get one! As for the airlock, if you run it up/down multiple time, it should clear the air out (Worked for me).

goldfish, you could probably find a used pump from salvage yard, and as far as ordering one I know I looked through ishopmarine and big bummer it's listed as N/A, luckily I got my other unit to pick from.

Mikey,

That trim unit should push in about 3/4 of the way and then spring back only if pushed past 3/4. If it is loaded all the way up top, then something is wrong.

Re: TNT manual release screw broken, how can I get it out

Mark, it's loose when fully extended, so it's not loaded up all the way. I can actually push it down to about 2-3 inches from fully retracted, I just wondered if that normal. it needs more fluid too, so maybe adding more will get it working right.

Thats normal. that should only be loaded ath the bottom. Rememberthats a trim cylinder. Only need it for about 3-4 inches of travel before the tilt cylinder takes over.

Re: TNT manual release screw broken, how can I get it out

If you are using a dremel tool, be carefull. The idea is to get the valve out, and still have a perfect sealing surface. That Tinker Toy Dremel will make short work of that. Did you try a left hand drill bit? With the engine clear up you are in the tilt range, there will be some play there. Get the valve out, fill, and bleed the system, then see what you have.

Re: TNT manual release screw broken, how can I get it out

RJ, that's the plan, I definitely don't want to do anything to the pump body itself. isn't the the valve part of bleeding process? according to manual I need to loosen it and then run pump for about seconds then top it off and repeat three or four times. anyways I'm gonna go hunt for some tools now, just got home from doing some tailwater trout fishing at Smith Lake.
