Folks This my first post. I have a 2006 205BR with 350 engine. Previous engine was a 305 discovered block was patched with JB weld. That's a whole other story. The engine and boat have been running great until recently. Didn't take boat out in 2020 because of Covid 19. Prior to launching boat in lake I checked it out at house with fake a lake hooked up, started fine all looked like a go. Put boat in the water, started, and idled until away from no wake zone. I advanced the power and at that instant everything shut down. I managed to get boat back home to troubleshoot and discovered several issues. First issue the fuse block on the starter was blown. Replaced fuse and still no joy. found 20 amp fuse on top of engine blown, replaced still no joy until I found a 10 amp fuse under dash blown, and Wala engine started and ran great. All was well until the engine didn't stop when the ignition switch was turned off. When I removed the 20 amp fuse the engine started and stopped with ignition switch. Called the Mercury folks and described problem stated above, was told to look for a diode (red) near carburetor. I found the red diode which is encased in red plastic marked with a B-diode symbol-A. I checked it using diode scale and it is shorted. Now the question, what is the part number to order? I was told with the diode in the circuit with the 20 amp fuse, the engine will shut down with ignition switch. It is confusing that the engine will run with or without the 20 amp fuse. Not sure if it will run without shorted diode installed. Anyone with knowledge to advise what is happening?

Don't buy a diode from Merc, they charge too many dollars for an item that will cost you a few cents at the local electronics shop. Look for something like a 1N5405...

Yeah, seems like a real rube goldberg system. It will run without the diode, forget if it will run too rich or lean. The diode keeps the tks from backfeeding the ignition. @alldodge has some very good explanations and diagrams of the system, not sure which of his posts is most up to date/complete
