hello out there i am new to this forum and i have a question about my 12 ft aluminum boat. i know that this is a silly question however i will ask it. my boat is rated for a 15 hp outboard and i was wondering if my tin would support a 20 hp. i have already re-supported my transom as the old material was rotten, and i could re-support it with a few more gussets (stiffeners) if need be, the reason i ask is that my 9.8 packed it in and i would like a new motor for my boat. not alot out there to choose from in my price range but i found this 20 hp and it is in my price range. for the type of trips i do with it, a larger motor would be nicer then my old 9.8 a 15 hp would be perfect however this 20 hp is in my range. so if anybody could help me out with this silly question i would be great full. i do realize that weight is a big concern and the transom as well. thanks for the help

Re: tinner

I wouldn't do it. A 12 footer is unstable enough as it is, overpowering it would be invitation for disaster.

Howdy, Henny.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The power rating of a boat depends on many factors. A sound transom is only one, and your transom is not sound.

Yes, I read that you resupported the rotton transom. That is far short of replacing it and I wouldn't recommend a 15HP unless you replace the transom.

Putting a 20HP on her would be daring fate, which is always a very bad idea with boats.
