Timing Wheel Cover

Im trying to replace the optical light sensor on my 90 Johnson 1999. I am having difficulty removing the plastic timing wheel cover. I have tried gently prying it up but feel like I will damage either it or the important parts underneath it. I have sprayed it with pb blaster with no luck. Any suggestions?

man Im glad to hear that. I messed with it 5 or 6 times today, spraying it and letting it soak for an hour. Then gently prying on two side with no movement at all. I actually cracked the outer edge on on one side, pretty frustrating. Im not even sure the optical sensor is the problem, which just adds to the frustration. I think Ill order one and just go ahead and break it off in the removal process. Do you think heat may help, Im concerned about melting the surrounding plastic cap itself and the plastic components under it. Really appreciate the help.

Just break it off and if needed crack the brass center and remove. Heat will only melt the plastics.
