Timing or fuel??

I have a 1973 eveinrude starflite 135 V4 2 stroke. At this point i love the motor. Sunday(sept.4) was the first time it hit water in 3 to 4 years. Starts and runs like a champ in the driveway and in a no wake zone. Here's my problem:..... When i go WOT it dies and here's the funny part, it runs ok at half throttle( still seems like timing is off) but if i give it alittle more while i flip the choke switch it starts to come out of it, but then goes back to what it was doing. Then alittle more throttle and a little more choke (2-3 times) after its alittle warm it comes out of it and runs way better and planes out. Seems like the fuel pump is giving out to me or a fuel issue and can understand if its a timing issue. I didn't check the pump ball when running but did after i killed it and it was good. The boat i have is a 1976 glastron bass boat(16ft.). Even when its running ok it still seems like it has alot more to put out. Any help is greatly welcome and needed . I am a automotive Tech so most likely i have the tools, but really dont have the knowledge of outboards. Thanks to anyone who helps.

The fact that it runs better when you hit the primer is telling you that it's running lean. Between that and the fact that the engine sat for several years makes it sound like the carbs need to be taken apart, cleaned, and rebuilt.

thanks for the quick response. I have a PDF file for a manual but no book itself. Where is a good place to get carb kits? kind of exspensive in my town.

sounds like you have a fuel supply issue. Pull the carbs and clean them. I bet if you drain the bowls, a bunch of crud will pour out. Did on mine. might as well replace the hoses with alcohol resistant ones while you're down there. Check your fuel pump while you're at it. all of this shouldn't cost much, if anything at all. read the top secret file.

I have a PDF file for a manual but no book itself.

Try to find an original factory service manual, the generic off brand ones leave a lot to be desired. You can often find them on ebay if you're patient, and there's a company that sells reprints (thought they're a bit pricier than ebay), someone on here can help out with their name.

Well take the carbs apart. The first one was pretty clean so at this point i'm like greeeeaaaat. Took the other one apart and oh boy, the main jets were plugged solid. Great calls on rebuilding them! Thanks again and i'll let you know how sunday(on the water) go's.

make sure you clean the high speed jets well. I used a violin and guitar string to get all the way from the pickup to the jets where the fuel enters, to the throat of the carb. also make sure you have the floats right side up, I made that mistake too. you may need to grind down a flat headed screw driver to get at the screws properly.

Thanks guys. I did get the boat in the water last sunday. What a difference! One carb was completely stuffed. It only had i idle jet open. Tore both down and soaked them in carb cleaner for 12 minutes at a time. Let me tell ya, i will NOT leave that thing full trottle. Boy she scoots! After sunday i have to be the happiest boater around. I have got just under $1000 in the whole operation. Bought the boat for $600 running on muffs(didnt know much at this time) found that cylinder 1 on the 70hp 3cy. mercury had busted rings. I've been looking for a motor for over a year now. Took a gamble on this 135 eveinrude and got a home run thanks to you guys. If anyone needs parts for a 79' mercury 700 70hp 3cylinder 2 stroke i have'em. Thanks again!!
