timing on merc.260 ---350 4 barrel

what is the best way to check the timing .it,s a 1987 350 4-barrel , or merc 260 . today i seen a guys piston on his boat ,with a hole burned in it from the timing being advance to much.

timing light-8degrees btdc.

piston with hole burned thru it is detanation. may or maynot be timing adjustment.
