A lot depends on which heads (and if they are stock -- never cut) and which carbs you're using. The stock timing was 28*. On a new powerhead OMC suggested backing off 4* until it was broke in then put it at 28*. On most pleasure boats you'll see little or no difference between 26* and 28*.
