Re: timing curve for omc 225hp

What is the difference between the auto and marine hei distributors?

I've got a few from auto's, I haven't seen a marine unit. I could see the cap being different, maybe the coils?

Could I safely use a regular auto hei with a marine cap?

Any help would be appreciated.

Here 's the deal. An automotive HEI has about a 1/8 inch vent hole in the bottom of the housing that could let explosive fumes enter the cap, ignite and flash out of the hole. Marine HEI hae a fine flame arrestor screen over the hole to prevent the flash from getting out of the distributor and causing a bigger boom. Putting automotive HEI guts in marine housing would be fine or putting flame arrestor in automotive housing. I have converted automotive alternators for marine use by using the flame arrestor screens from a bad marine alternator.

Buttanic
