Re: timing cover questions

I think everyone is loosing sight of the original question, which was.

I ordered a new timing cover for my 5.7 from a Merc dealer because its a plastic one time use. When it arrived, it was a metal one and the parts guy could not find the plastic one for my serial number.

The answer is, it's not the original block, it's a reman that someone put the SN tag from the old block on. Therefore the parts program showing the original engine isn't going to work in your case.

Haven't lost sight Don. Just thinking to my self now if a plastic cover CAN be used on an older block (as in the engine was rebuilt, and the rebuilder chose to use plastic over metal). If that's true, and it's an '89 block, he may also be able to use a steel cover as well (would have ALL the bolt holes tapped for a steel cover VS the ones missing from a Vortec block).

Re: timing cover questions

Well I think I get to join Chris' " no oil in the bilge" club. Got it all back together, fired her up and no oil leak. Let it run for half hour and still no leak. We'll take her for a rip tomorrow and make her work.

I did look for that number on the front by the water pump, but didn't write it down and then I forgot about it. I will look again tomorrow. I would like to know what year this motor is.

Thanks for your help guys....

Re: timing cover questions

Hi guys;

Well, I did the dye test and it is leaking at the timing cover. It seems to me the O-ring/gasket does not match match the casting on the block. I can see the O-ring outside the cover around a bolt and it is leaking there. What I'm wondering, is this the right cover.

Don's last post in this thread was to check the number on the front of the motor, on the left side by the water pump for a positive identification.

Maybe someone could identify this block and find a part number for the timing cover.

There seemed to be some seepage where the block meets the intake. After doing some reading, I discovered I didn't do it right, so I will remove it and do it again

Thanks for everyone's help.....

I spent some time trying to look up that number without much success. Could someone point me in the right direction......

Re: timing cover questions

Your suffix code decodes as follows;

-----V--------------09---------25------------UPN=
Flint Michigan----September-----25th---------- 1990 GM Truck, 210 HP, RPO L05, TBI

Your engine was a reman, with a block that was originally from a truck.

Re: timing cover questions

I've never seen the timing cover you have on the right. Have you checked the crank position sensor hole? If it's open you'll have a leak. It's located on the bottom left of the cover.

Here's a picture of the inside of my timing cover, it gives 2 part numbers, one with a crank position sensor, one without. If it is the cover with a sensor hole, it will leak oil if it is not plugged. For a marine application, you'll need the cover without the sensor hole.

These are the P/N's:

With a sensor hole: 93800970
Without a sensor hole: 12562818

You mentioned it was leaking near the intake, so this is probably not much help, but worth a look. :D

Re: timing cover questions

Well guys, I solved the problem.

I went to the local engine builder and asked for a metal timing cover from a 1990 Chevy small block and brought me one for $15.00.

This past weekend we went boarding, then Sunday around noon, I tore into it and Monday evening we were on the river. I pulled the engine, removed the timing cover and oil pan. then I put new( to me ) timing cover on and replaced the pan gasket. Then stuffed the engine back in and was done around 4: 30 pm. This was the third pull of the engine this year.

Spent 3 hours on the river and no loss of oil. I am very happy!

Thanks you guys for all your help....
