Time sert length

I'm hoping to get advice on installing a pair of time serts in my lower unit drain and vent holes. The engine is an '82 70hp, J70ELCNB. The vent hole is stripped (currently helicoiled) and the drain is on its way to being stripped. I'm looking for a more robust installation than helicoils.

I believe that it should be a 3/8 i.d. insert with 16 thread pitch. But I'm not sure what the length of the insert should be to lock in the bottom threads to the tapped hole. Can anyone tell me what the housing wall thickness is on these lower units?

Heli-Coil brand Inserts are as good as anything else, and in a lot of Tests have outperformed Time Sert

Agree. Been using Heli-Coils for years.

I use Keen serts and never had a problem...and a whole lot better than a heli-coil
