Tilting the tower of power

Okay... this motor is big and I'm having a hell of a time getting it out of the water when trying to get it back on the trailer... am I missing something here?

I know there are electric trim and tilt mounts but those tend to be $$$. I don't mind lifting by hand but am curious if there is something I should check to make it easier like replace a hydraulics part or something.

Those tilt rams tend to bind up the tilt. I do not know of a cure. If you can tilt it at all, it is likely working properly. The motor should need to be in forward gear to tilt it at all.

bring a buddy with you and ask them to raise the motor. They do make a device to help leverage one up manually. But the ones I've seen in catalogs are only rated up to about 40 hp .( suppose you could make one or have one made for less then 100 bucks)

What do you mean tilt rams? I'm trying to raise the motor out of the water when I'm getting it back on the trailer.

Interesting. I might have to look in to these. I don't know if it'll work on my motor as the top part might just come off if I use this method.

I'm assuming you have shocks. With them you have to raise it slowly giving them time for the gas to move by the pistons and release that pressure. Other than that, a long stick with a groove at the end that would fit into the hand grove provided at the rear of the engine. Then applying downward pressure from the front of the engine you have a lever. You are talking about foot-lbs. For every foot you move out, you reduce your pounds required to lift the engine. Get a stick 2' long from where it strikes the engine and you reduced your lifting force by half. 3 ft to 1/3. Besides, you are applying pressure from inside the boat, not hanging off the transom. Big difference.

Got it... Right now it's impossible for me to lift it up by myself from within the docked boat. I'll try to find a rod I can use for leverage in the meantime.

Is it hard to find a kit that will lift the motor up for me? I'm just curious if they even make one for this motor. Thanks

You didn't mention year. Option would be tilt and trim. I don't think Merc made tilt for towers. On the handle, the top on the engines is cast aluminum and should take more than the 100 ish pound pressure you are putting on it. The good news is that the power head helps to counter balance the remainder of the engine so all you need to do is move it forward about 45 degrees and most of the work is done.

On what to use, a pole with a pair of chain hooks mounted at the far end with a bolt through the pole keeping it loose, the hooks would fall and as you pulled it forward they would hook under the rim of the hand hold on the engine. Tractor Supply or HD or Lowes would have them. There are two kind of chain hooks. One that grasps a link and holds, and the other has a circular throat and it is a sliding hook. A siding hook could be slung over an object and hooked to the main line. Pulling on the main line would snug it up to the object. You want this kind to give you more room to get them under the hand hold.

Then get something like hard foam rubber to protect your engine cowl and to help in holding the pole centered on the engine cowl.

Goggle CMC tilt and trim . You will find exactly what you are looking for. And yes merc had a tilt and trim for their outboards , I think you could buy with or without.

Interesting... so that's what it's supposed to look like. Good to know. Asking the seller if he is including anything else. Will this work on my motor as it looks like he's parting from an old 35HP motor?

Probably won't work as clamps, hence PTT cylinders, are sized to the HP. Laddies would know.

The PTT from the 850 will work fine. If you plan to tilt it manually, pull slowly and steady, rather that trying to jerk it.

The power trim cylinders are the same for all HPs only the pump is different. I am aware of 2 sizes of piston 3/4" and 1" I would ask seller what size the piston rod is before buying. If you install the whole system you will have trim and tilt which means you can change the ride angle while underway, I think you will be happy with the improvement overall.

Reading through threads here..Im having problems with my trim and tilt. Sat all winter, went to check it other day and would not move. Motor makes noise, relays click (already swapped them) took trim all the way off. Oiled cylinders and refilled trim fluid. Put back on and still the same. GGRRRRR... So thought I would run it without it but my motor has no way to lock down. I have had boats that did not have tilt/trim but there was a lock to hold it from "flopping in the wind". I have a 88 Vision f/s with a Johnson GT 150 VRO. Model
