Tilt works, but Trim doesn't

I have a 1978 Glastron CV23 with a OMC 240 I/O.

At the end of last season, my prop wouldn't tilt up. I could hear clicking in the solenoid, but no motor action.

I had a mechanic replace the tilt/trim motor earlier this season. Now, the motor tilts up and down no problem.

Problem now, is, the prop won't trim; it's stuck in the up position.

I hear a motor working when I hit the trim, but no prop action. The motor just spins. The motor is at the front/right of the engine. My assumption is it's hydraulic, but I could be wrong. I originally thought the same motor handled trim and tilt.

Any thoughts on why the trim may not be working?

Thanks!

Fantastic question! One I've already been asking.

You may have figured out I'm a newb to boats.

I've been out looking around my engine for a reservoir. I don't see one. The pump has a screw on the side of it, but I imagine there should be a separate reservoir.

Thanks!

Doubt that there is a separate reservoir?

There is a plug half way up the motor, right side facing front. Is this the fill spot? If so, a few questions:

is there a way to know it's level aside from just putting fluid in and letting it overflow?

Do I need to run the motor periodically while filling?

Ayuh,... I don't know Your's,...
But most are Simple, with a Fill screw,+ hopefully a Vent screw....
Usually within a 1/4 - 1/2" in level of each other...
Fill 1 til it tops out at the other, wipe up the mess,+ Try it...

Re: Tilt works, but Trim doesn't

Just wanted to check to see if I'm on the right track.

I've been adding fluid to the reservoir. Whereas the motor was spinning freely when pushing either up or down, now it only spins freely down. It sounds like it's engaging on up.

If I spin it down for a few seconds, it takes a few turns to engage on up.

My guess is the fluid is cycling through the system, and I should keep adding it until down engages?

Also, is there a way to manually lower the trim?

Thanks!

Does your trim system look like the one I posted in this thread: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=325360

If so, you should trim all the way out (front of the engine all the way down) then fill the reservoir ,#71 in the diagram, to the top of the fill plug (mine only has one-not shown on the diagram). Then cycle the trim up and down a couple of times and check the level again, add fluid as needed. Repeat until the level doesn't go down. This should purge any air out of the system. This worked with mine after I took it apart to fix the motor and clean out the valve assy. Been working fine since.

Edit: Just remembered I had a pic of my engine showing the trim pump. The fill plug/screw on mine is facing to the left and is just visible protruding to the left of the reservoir just above the aluminum strap.

Re: Tilt works, but Trim doesn't

Update:

I've been trying to fill the reservoir. It doesn't appear that big, so I'm concerned that I might have a leak.

I put oil in and cycle the trim. At first, pressing "bow up" will cause the motor to engage, and "bow down" will make it spin freely. After a few cycles of that, "bow up" stops engaging immediately. It'll spin for a moment, then engage. If I keep cycling, the "bow up" stops engaging.

Anyone think this sounds like typical behavior?

Also, anyone know how to manually trim a motor?

Thanks,
Greg
