Tilt won't lower

Hey guys, my older (circa 1987) 115 Evinrude went down last week, and the little motor thingee sounds like it wants to go down, but the outboard just sits there. The engine brace thingee is off, nothing's holding it up that I can see, and the little round thing (?pump?) is whirring it's little head off, just nothing moves . . . .

Where should I start? I tried searching for trim but I got so many posts that after wading through a dozen thought I'd just ask the question afresh!

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Re: Tilt won't lower

Does it have fluid?

Is the manual release screw tight?

Does it move at all?

Is one direction better than the other?

Can you post a pic of your unit?

When did the trim last operate properly?

Any signs of leaking fluid around the piston assembly?

:confused:Where do I check?

:confused:What does this look like?
Does it move at all?
:(No . . . it is stuck in the up position
Is one direction better than the other?
:rolleyes:No . . . it is stuck in the up position. When I do 'up' it makes a clicking noise like it's maxed out (which I assume it is).

Re: Tilt won't lower

Go here and look at your unit:

http://shop2.evinrude.com

Look for the model with "TL" in it, then click "power trim tilt hydraulic"

I believe it is a 1990 cause they didn't make the 115 earlier. Use this diagram

Find the fluid fill plug (part 30). Fill the unit with trim fluid. Try to tilt down and have someone push down when you hit the trim button. You mave have a stuck pressure relief valve which can happen when the motor is fully trimmed up.

If that doesn't work, find your manual release screw (part 66 or 21 try both). Unscrew it 2 turns counter clockwise. Dont unscrew too far. You will damage the oring on the manual relief screw. See if you can then move the motor. It supposed to allow fluid bypass. Let me know what happens.
