tilt/trim

2000 merc 50hp tilt/trim lifts and holds motor with no problem. However I put it in the water yesterday and it will not trim up at speed and will not hold position if placed before powering up. How much oil should be in the level plug when trimmed right up or do I have a leaking seal?

Kim, First bleed the unit. To do this tist the motor all the way up. Now wait 15 min qand remove the fill plug. If clear red oil runs out, the unit is full. If not add some Dextron III ATF until is spiolls out. If after it is full, it still will not hold thrust, one of the valves may be bad or the piston seals on the trim rams is bad.
