tilt/trim stuck

'83 evinrude 100 hp

I went to take my boat out and lifted motor a tad (successfully) to release safety bracket and the motor would not drop... I was frustrated as we wanted to go fishing so I dropped the motor manually by loosening the threaded screw on the right side on the hydraulic system. Now, after reading several threads, I realize that I could be low on fluid, but the motor will not raise now as more fluid spilled when I manually lowered the motor. Is there a way to manually raise the motor in order to add more fluid?

Did the PTT electric motor operate in both directions OR did it only operate in the UP position?

Fluid spilled from where when you manually lowered the engine?

Loosening the manual release valve two turns will allow you to lift the engine.

Any idea how it got to be low on fluid?

My 90 hp used to have a slow leak so that I'd hove to top it off every couple of times out, finally I figured out the previous owner didn't have the o-ring on the fill plug.

tie a rope to the prop and throw it over a branch. loosen the same manual release as before and pull on rope. when you got it up high enough to add fluid etiher brace the engine or tie off the rope.

Failure to drop is not a fluid level problem. More likely, failure to drop is caused by motor going bad or a relay/wiring problem. OMC builds a lot of good stuff but trim wiring is not included. You should check relays, fuses, connections, switches, sensors. If you need a litmus test then hotwire the motor straight to a battery taking care to know if you have a 2w or 3w motor and how to hot wire without ruining it.

The PPT motor did run in both directions, but after a long run (in either directions) a straining sound would occur.

Not sure if there is a bad leak, but the boat was sitting for 3 years... I used the boat the weekend prior without incident though. I almost think that I raised the motor up too high- is that even possible?

It works in both directions but makes a straining sound if I operate for over a minute in either direction.

The fluid spilled from the manual release nut and at one point squirted out a bit.

Thanks, I'll check the wiring... I am a rookie at working on outboards, but am guessing the relays are rectangular boxes 9like on other equipment) that serve as electrical switches and a good knock will sometimes get them switching again. Do you know if these relays are located in the small rectangular electrical box that has a wiring harness of sorts or is it located near the PPT motor? Thanks:)

Fluid leaking from the manual release valve indicates that the O Ring on the valve is broken..... replace it. Never back out the valve over two turns.... if the retaining snap ring is still in place, the O ring will hit it which results in a damaged O Ring.

As above, turn the manual release valve out two full turns (no further), then lift the engine to its highest tilt position and lock it there. Tighten the manual release valve. Fill the PTT fluid reservoir. Release the trailering lock.

The fact that the PTT electric motor operates in both directions proves that both of
the PTT relays are okay. The unit is self bleeding. You may need to fill the reservoir more than once.

There is no need to have the electric motor running for a minute..... that causes overheating. The electric motor is somewhat expensive.
