I have a 3 wire tilt trim motor from a 77 johnson. The old owners had the TT wired directly to the switch. I installed a solenoid and can't get it to move up. The down is wired straight to the switch and works fine. If I jumper the solenoid the motor will move up. I have the power from the battery and the switch on one big post of the solenoid. Up(blue) from the TT motor to the other big post. The up from the switch to the smaller post. I even went and bought another solenoid just in case the first was bad. Any help would be appreciated.

Correct the solenoid is only used to go UP.-----Try hooking motor wires directly to battery , black to 12 volt negative blue to positive.----Does trim motor operate ?

Yes the motor will work hooked directly to the battery. The TT motor is brand new. Also works wired directly to switch

I have a mercury I replaced the wrong solenoid and took a while to figure it out. Previous owner changes are so special aren't they?

Lol! Everything in this boat was jerry rigged. Stripped it down to the bare hull and redoing it the right way. Its the electrical that gets me everytime

All solenoids need a ground. Sometimes it is the metal case of the solenoid, that needs to be grounded. Sometimes that have a dedicated grounding lug.

Did you buy a marine solenoid? They are spark proof, which is a good idea.
