Tilt/trim pump question

I have a 1978 Merc 800 with a 2 cyl. tilt/trim...

On the trim pump there is a "thing" that looks like you can turn it.

It says turn right to lock, turn left to unlock... I turned it all the way left and it came off the bolt... is this some kind of valve that when turned left lets the motor kick off bottom/stumps? It says to not use reverse when turned left...

I probably should have posted this under "stupid questions 101" ">

I don't think it should come out. But it's for allowing you to raise and lower the motor by hand instead of the controls.

Thanx eepks, that's kinda what I thought it was for, couldn't see how it worked and didn't try to lift motor by hand. It does say not to use reverse when knob is turned to the left... lol, hard reverse and you'd probably tear out the transom d

It is kind of a weird design, the knob is 3" long and about 1/2" in diameter, and if you keep turning it, it comes off the bolt!... strange... I can see where it would be useful if you were in shallow waters, or were (heaven forbid) going to beach it.

Crunch, That Knob "disconnects" the power trim/tilt system. If the motor is down, turning the knob left will allow you to raise the motor by hand. Useful in the winter when the battery is disconnected. The knob should always be turned right when operating. The PTT system is designed to kick up if you hit something. I know, I hit a rock at 35MPH. Motor kicked up w/o an issue. If you have the knob turned left and put the motor in reverse, it will pop up, and you will not move in reverse.
